Help me write a story!!!
Alright then, I had a brainstorm earlier tonight where an idea for a story popped up. I haven't delved into the story itself yet, but I've got the synopsis and main characters down. I want you to throw all your ideas at me! Character development, plot, settings, and supporting roles.
So here's the synopsis:
SIN
sinopsis:
A story about two unrelated but similar souls who both commit a regrettable murder, and whose paths end up intertwining. It’s a story about the sins we commit when driven to the brink of insanity in a cold, uncertain world. The story is split between two characters: an unstable, priest turned killer, and an ex-military cop who’s been fired because of his violent, unpredictable nature. They each tell their story separately, and they end up intersecting at a chance meeting in the cathedral; where the cop tries to seek refuge.
The mood of the story is gothic meets noir, and the city is appropriately so; a mix of the medieval gothic: tall, slender, and sharp; and 1940’s Bauhausian architecture.
Setting: Unspecified, unnamed New York-like city, modern day.
Priest:
Vincent Persicarius, 38yr.
Priest for the cathedral DiMortualia.
Has been questioning the religion he serves for years now; slowly sinking into dementia. Ends up killing someone early in the story.
(surname means “murderer”)
(church name means “funeral dirge”)
Cop:
Robert Painter, 44yr.
Ex-cop, war veteran
Fired from the police force due to unpredictable and violent behavior. Tortured by his experiences in the horrors of war. Kills someone early in the story.
(surname is an alternate play on Roger Painter, birthname of Rozz Williams)

I don't like the idea that both main characters are people who were in positions of trust cast into something les than enviable. It sounds as if both of the are basically just telling the same story from different perspectives. I think that one of the characters should be turned into someone who was on the lower rungs of society (a homeles drug addict, for example). One learns what it's like to be dragged down, and the other sees the light at the end of the tunnel.
That's my opinion, though, so feel free to disregard it.

I've got a couple of "flashes" : The cop could be a war veteran with a brain all fucked up by drugs (kind of amphetamines or some LSD...) . That can explain a unpredictable behavior , with blackouts if you want/need ...
He could have killed his wife on a rush .
About Vincent : This guy is missing his whole life , so he wants to get it back somehow ... What if he had another secret existence , like a double life? He could say to himself that he is testing his faith , or prove god's existence ...
I see Vincent like the one who shows the cop what one feels when being "on the other side of the law/moral" ...

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! BTS, I've already got a plan like that set out for Roger. He's in the force but in a slowly degrading situation. He's a heavy drinker living in a beaten down tenement; his wife leaving him for the war and taking his children her.
Steppenwolf, a bad acid trip might be a great scenario for one of the characters, but I think war is quite enough trauma alone to cause flashbacks and instability.

Why do you not like the setting?

If he wasn't an ex-cop I would like the setting. I know that sounds weird.

Why a male ex-cop? what about a female murderess?

I think it would be very difficult to have a plausible reason for a priest to commit murder. It would be far to easy to seem forced, or too far-fetched. Do you have any ideas on that one yet?
