Philosophical Task of the Week

Define "lie."

I think I already have a definition that I am happy with, but I'll wait to post it, in order not to taint the dialog too early.

To deploy oneself from a standing position into a horizontal position, e.g.

"I want to lie down." or "I want to lie on top of you!"

Two Definitions:

1. To put oneself in a horizontal position in order to rest or sleep or work on the underside of a car

2. To tell an untruth; to purposely decieve another person, whether for good or ill. [If one is convinced that something is the truth and repeats it, and later finds out it is -not- the truth, then they did not lie, even though they told an untruth. In order for it to be a lie, it must be a purposeful deception.]

To act, speak, or behave in a way that is in contradiction to what you hold to be moral honesty (which, is relative at best).

Ani DiFranco may have put it best;

"They say that the truth will set you free
but then so will a lie.
It depends if you're trying to get to the promised
or if you're just trying to get by."
