I know it's the worst idea ever, but I really want to go platinum blonde.

So, I'm tired of my blue black curls and want to dye them a pretty platinum blonde with some kind of freaky colour in it. I know it's a very bad idea. I still want to do it. I've got very strong, full hair, according to the hair lady from the opera. So, I was wondering if anyone's got any advice for me (like, what to do if my hair dies or goes undead or whatever).

Why is it the worst idea ever? One has to try out new things once in a while to avoid conformity.

My advice is to go to a professional hair-salon and let them do it. They usually use top quality stuff and know what they're doing so you don't end up "hair-hurt" from it.

If you want to get things really ridiculously white, put a silver rinse through it. That gets it totally white. Looks unearthly on a young person.
Use conditioner, and lots of it. Bleach is damaging, and conditioner can help. Get advice from a hairdresser on which type suits your hair best.

Please please please go to a salon. It's pricey, but I ended up shaving my head after doing it myself.

HOWEVER, if you just HAVE to do it yourself, then don't make the same mistake I did; putting the bleach straight in. Use dye stripper first, then use the bleach. If it's not the desired shade after the first go then just leave it for about a week before putting any more bleach in. An important rule of thumb with DIY peroxiding is build it up. Don't just keep bleaching the fuck out of your hair if you're not satisfied yet with the result. Anywho, you're still going to get a ginger sheen to your hair, so to get rid of that use a toner.

The best thing you can do now is buy a good conditioner and use it every day from now on until you get the job done, so you build your hair up into very good condition before you do anything with it. (I'd reccomend contioning your hair every day for at least 2 or 3 weeks prior to bleaching).

How long is your hair? Have you a pic? The longer your hair is the more prone it will be to damage.

Yes, GET IT DONE PROFESSIONALLY.

Conditioner will be your new best friend.

And as Delkaetre and electrosexual said, you need to get something to even out the orange/yellowish-tint your hair will have after bleaching. There's a product called Shimmer Lights that works well for that, according to my friend who is a hair-stylist.

I wish I had enough guts to do this. I'd love to have snow white hair. I'm too timid to go for it. I care too much, perhaps.

I think it's a great idea, just have it done professionally. I wouldn't attempt yourself, too much risk.

Hey, thanks. I don't think I'll be able to have it done professionally (the hairdresser wanted 800 NOK to do it, which is a bit too pricey for my budget), so that's why I thought it was a bad idea - I'll probably fry my hair if I DIY. I don't have very long hair at the moment; it's a longish bob (it goes down to my shoulders in the back - I've had it shaped in the front). Of course, I've got curls so it looks shorter than it really is. I'll have to upload a picture this afternoon, don't have one right now. Conditioning is a very good idea... *hurries off to the store*

Conditioning is not only a good idea, it's downright required!!! I bleached the underside of my hair myself, and I wish that I had not. If I go for more than 2 days without washing and conditioning the heck out of my hair, it tangles into this horrible rat's nest.

If you must dye your hair, just make sure after you have some really good conditioner and you use it like there's no tomorrow. Good luck!!

Also, due yourself a favor, and don't buy bleach "out of the box", so to say. Go to a Beauty Supplies store. It will be more pricey, but it's well worth.

Make sure any residual dye is out of your hair, bleach it once a week making sure you condition the fuck out of your hair.
DO NOT! and I repeat DO NOT! bleach it until it is white...bleach it until it is pale ish yellow then use a toner or a silver shampoo, this will take any yellow out.

Use 30vol peroxide with blue bleach powder. First, bleach the ends, half an our later wash it out, then bleach the midlengths, half an hour later wash it out, then finally....do the roots. The roots always develop quicker, so be careful.

Do a strand test aswell, it will give you a better idea of the amount of time it will take the bleach to develop and if it goes wrong, well, it's just a few hairs...not your whole head.

I addition to the conditioner try the John Frieda glazes, if you can get them where you are, they have clear (also a light blond with color that will wash out but just brightens short term and will not lighten). That will help your hair look super shiny and healthy even when it is not and it will repair is some by sealing down the hair shafts. Condition first (and whatever conditioner leave it on as long as you have time to but at least 5 min every time) then the glaze for about 5 minutes every time you wash your hair. If you can't get those glazes, a salon can do a glaze (for a lot less price than bleaching your hair) but they really do wonders with daily use and they are not expensive if you can get them where you are at.

Okay, I had a go at it last night. The result is a disaster. It's only bleached in the roots, then it starts going reddish- brown and it still is black in the ends. What do I do now?! *panic* I can't keep wearing hats all the time either...

Well, you have to wait a week before you bleach again....it will look abit silly for awhile, it's in no way an instant process. You could always do a wash in wash out colour..or try a coloured mousse in the inbetween stage.

go to a salon and ask if they do bleach repair (basically they will decide if the part of your hair that is the darkest can be safely lightened to match the rest and then they will do a glaze that will give enough shine to make it look semi normal) it should cost about $40-$60 (some places could be as low as $30 and others could be ridiculously more). Other than that just deep condition your hair and wear it up so it is harder to see

DO NOT even think about bleaching your hair now. It's very porous at the moment and it's likely that the bleach will only just damage your hair and not actually lighten it.

Wait a week, then go for it again.

Go to a salon before it totally breaks off from more at home bleach. It is REALLY hard to get dark hair light, it will take a professional and professional strength products and repair products to get it lighter at all. It will take them several hours and then usually more than one or two sessions. But seriously you are much better off going to a salon now and not after you mess with it more.

You should be able to find a salon that will do it for around $150-$200 for the bleaching plus whatever it will cost to repair the damage already done.

Just shave your head :] Like completely bald. It can look quite elegant if you pull it off with a confident air

Or alternatively, cut your hair short and get rid of all the ginger/brown hair.

right because there is nothing worse than an at home dye job
And I acually really like blond hair
especially when its really light it almost looks white
( kinda like draco from harry potter )

Did you black black dye in your hair? If so, this was a bad idea. Otherwise, you can't fuck up your hair in one bleaching.

I had a blue black. Anyway, due to a musical theatre play I'm in at the moment I'm back to black. The producer didn't like what I'd done at all and ordered me to reverse it. Can't say I blame her. I'm saving up for an appointment with a hairdresser now.

There's no way of going platinum blonde now, to put it bluntly.

When hair is bleached, it becomes more porous, and dyeing over that just makes it impossible to bleach out. If I were you I wouldn't do any more to your hair. I made the mistake of fucking up my hair with bleach and had to shave it all off.

Yes. You'll have to grow it out, now. I recommend a short haircut to make it quicker. otherwise you'll have to wait years. And fuck your producer.

I was platnium for a while and I use to use clairol born blonde maxi bleach. I called them and even though it says only 90 minutes max in the instructions, it is safe to leave on for 2 full hours if you have VIRGIN hair, not previously dyed or anything at all. Made my hair white. It burned my scalp to the point of bleeding (even if I only left the bleach on for like 30 minutes), so I had to stop.
