Bush to veto bill banning waterboarding

http://news.**********/s/ap/20080308...s9RPkglEKs0NUE

WASHINGTON - The White House says President Bush will veto legislation on Saturday that would have barred the CIA from using waterboarding — a technique that simulates drowning — and other harsh interrogation methods on terror suspects.

Bush has said the bill would harm the government's ability to prevent future attacks. Supporters of the legislation argue that it preserves the United States' right to collect critical intelligence while boosting the country's moral standing abroad.

"The bill would take away one of the most valuable tools on the war on terror, the CIA program to detain and question key terrorist leaders and operatives," deputy White House press secretary Tony Fratto said Friday.

The bill would restrict the CIA to using only the 19 interrogation techniques listed in the Army field manual.

The legislation would bar the CIA from using waterboarding, sensory deprivation or other coercive methods to break a prisoner who refuses to answer questions. Those practices were banned by the military in 2006, but the president wants the harsh interrogation methods to be a part of the CIA's toolbox.

Backers of the legislation, which cleared the House in December and won Senate approval last month, say the interrogation methods used by the military are sufficient.

"President Bush's veto will be one of the most shameful acts of his presidency," Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., said in a statement Friday. "Unless Congress overrides the veto, it will go down in history as a flagrant insult to the rule of law and a serious stain on the good name of America in the eyes of the world."

He noted that the Army field manual contends that harsh interrogation is a "poor technique that yields unreliable results, may damage subsequent collection efforts, and can induce the source to say what he thinks the (interrogator) wants to hear."

hm. yeah but since when does an interrogator that uses torture care about the reliability of the results?

If he does veto it is there a likely chance that congress will overturn it? Or isn't there quite enough support for that?

You might think that, but remember a few months back (check this very forum) for the previous bush veto - he veto'ed putting a 8 cent tax on cigarettes to pay for the educational needs of handicapped, underprivileged school children.

Both sides of Congress approved it, he veto'ed it. He then go just enough lackies to keep them from overturning it.

If they can block something like that, this is no challenge.

I mean seriously, how do you vote against something like that an think yer not going to hell, eh?

Well, this is my dose of sickness for the day. While I should feel an acute sense of outrage that he has once again done taken the blatantly immoral course, there have been so god damn many of these kinds of atrocities over the past...how many has it been now...seven years?...that I can't get past the apathy, sort of like a soldier who has seen the war. I just hope this doesn't mean he's won.
There was an excellent movie made recently that detailed this kind of torture, but I can remember for the life of me what it was called. Any ideas?

There have been a few. Rendition comes to mind...

That being said, they tried to overturn it, but were unsuccessful.

A "yes" vote is a vote to override the veto.

Voting yes were 220 Democrats and 5 Republicans.

Voting no were 3 Democrats and 185 Republicans.

Also note that McCain voted to ALLOW WATERBOARDING and voted to SUPPORT the veto.

He publicly has said he is against it, claims it torture, but when it was put to a vote he twice voted to keep it legal.

Goes to show, no matter what he is saying on the campaign trail about being a 'middle of the road' republican, it seems he still is towing the party line and voting alongside bush and his cronies.

If you check his voting record -

http://www.votesmart.org/voting_cate...an_id=S0061103

You will see a pattern. Publicly, he often denounces bush, claims he is against certain key issues, and makes huge public events around telling the world he is opposed to something, while at the same time he votes the opposite, along party lines, and does the exact opposite of what he claims to be against.

This is true on Iraq, waterboarding, healthcare, workers rights, and foreign policy to name just a few.

If elected, he will be the next bush. He says one thing, campaigns on that stance, then when elected he does the opposite.
