Heh, woo steriotypicism. Is that the word?
Their earlier albums were better, as I have said. They were originally a hardpunk band.. Now they're more of emo.

I have a pretty cool recording of me reading the Spoken Word from "But Home Is Nowhere.."

If I can find it, I'll link it here.

Their earlier stuff was really good. I still really like The Leaving Song, Feeling This & This Time Imperfect(My Favorite) They are truly amazing lyricists..

I'm working on a song with the lyrics from the Bonus Track "Now the World"

Forget the stigma everyone has about their music, and just read these lyrics;

We held hands on the last night on earth,
Our mouths filled with dust,
We kissed in the fields and under trees,
Screaming like dogs,
Bleeding dark into the leaves,
It was empty on the edge of town,
But we knew everyone floated along the bottom of the river,
So we walked through the waste,
Where the road curved into the sea,
And the shattered seasons lay,
And the smell of burning was on you like a disease,
In our cancer of passion you said "death is a midnight runner".

The sky comes crashing down with the news of an intimate suicide,
We picked up the shards and formed them into shapes of stars,
That wore like an antique wedding dress,
The echoes of the past broke the hearts of the unborn,
as the ferris wheel silently slowed to a stop,
Few insects skittered away in hopes of a better pastime,
I kissed you at the edge of the maelstrom,
I asked you to accompany me in a quick fall,
But you made me realize that my ticket wasn't good for two,
I rode alone.

You said, the cinders are falling like snow,
There is poetry in despair,
And we sang with unrivaled beauty,
Bitter elegies of savagery and eloquence, of blue and grey,
Strange we ran down desperate streets,
And carved our names in the flesh of the city,
The sun has stagnated somewhere beyond the rim, of the horizon,
And darkness is in the street, it curves in lines,
Still we lay under the emptiness, and drifted slowly outward,
And somewhere in the wilderness, came our salvation,
Scratched into the earth like a message.

I cannot leave here, i cannot stay,
Forever haunted more than afraid,
Asphyxiate on words I would say,
I'm drawn to a blackened sky as I turn blue.

There are no flowers, no not this time,
They'll be no angels gracing the lines,
Just these stark words i find,
I'd show a smile but I'm too weak,
I'd share with you could I only speak,
Just how much this hurts me.

I cannot stay here, I cannot leave,
Just like all I loved, I make believe,
Imagine heart, I disappear, seems,
No one will appear, here and make me real.

There are no flowers, no not this time,
They'll be no angels gracing the lines,
Just these stark words I find,
I'd show a smile but i'm too weak,
I'd share with you could I only speak,
Just how much this hurts me.

I'd tell you how it haunts me,
I'd tell you how it haunts me (cuts through my day, sinks into my dreams),
I'd tell you how it haunts me (cuts through my day, sinks into my dreams),
You don't get it, it haunts me.

Oh
There are no flowers, no not this time,
They'll be no angels gracing the lines,
Just these stark words i find,
I'd show a smile but i'm too weak,
I'd share with you could i only speak,
Just how much this hurts me,
Just how much this hurts me,
just how much you...

I'll try and find my recording, if anyone is bored enough to want to listen to it.

One time I was listening to But Home in Nowhere and reading something, I dont remember what it was, but it got me really depressed and angsty for like 25 minutes.

And for that time... *Dramatic pause* ...I was emo.

I've never enjoyed AFI's earlier stuff so much. Davey's voice and lyrics hadn't developed to their full potential yet. Art of Drowning is my favourite album by them. Sing the Sorrow was my favourite when it first came out, but I played it so often I'm sort of sick of it now.

Sing the sorrow ain't my favorite. And I said more of emo. I didn't claim they were. It's on the cusp of emo-core, though. Don't get me wrong. I like emo-core. But not emo. And there IS a difference.

On Amazon, I think, they got a reviewer who really hates AFI. I think he's the same guy that said something like "Slipknot sounds like your little sister during a temper tantrum. Yeah, they're loud, but theyre also obnoxious."

...What the fuck, dude. Keep your opinions to yourself.
Thats why I hate any highly corporate reviewers.

I think AFI was better during their time at Nitro.

This Time Imperfect is such a beautiful song. And the untitled poem is even more so. The first time I heard those hidden tracks I cried.

"The echoes of the past broke the hearts of the unborn,
as the ferris wheel silently slowed to a stop"

Those lines get me every time.

Allow me to share something with you.

One of the things we pride ourselves on, is the ability of our membership to exchange ideas freely.

This doesn't mean ramming your opinion up someone's ass with a chainsaw, but I think Marilyn Manson Sucks Ass, and say so all the time.

So as long as there isn't blood drawn, we encourage people to speak their minds and hearts.

That means that people here will frequently have and express different opinions than yours.

It's not a bad thing, as long as it isn't over the top. It's just part of the diversity at work here in our twisted little ecosystem.

In that same vein, here is the rough edit of the Spoken Word piece I am working on from "But Home Is Nowhere". When I get it all cleaned up, I want to layer in the music behind it. It's such a pretty piece. I thought about doing it in it's entirety, but it's so long.. I cried too the first time I heard it.

Amen, E_P_S, Manson does suck.

As far as A Fire Inside, I love Davey Havok's voice (also, awesome name) and the lyrics are good.

I listen to 'em now and again but they are not a band that I could listen to often, not like say, Type O.

Empty_Purple_Stars, I offer you my deepest apologies. It was terribly rude and closedminded of me to say what I did.Excuses are lame, but I blame it on my not being in the greatest of moods at the time of my post. I think I was being overly sensitive about it because earlier that day my friends were ragging on me for being so obsessed with them.

I agree with you comletly about freely expressing differen't opinions and ideas.

I listened to your rendition of the poem and it's quite lovely. I'm looking forward to hearing the completed version.

Just to clarify-
Reggaeton isn't latin pop, it's latin hip hop. It's definitely not Shakira.

AFI kind of sucks now. I really don't like Davey Havok's hair cut. He looked alot better with
long black hair, but anywho.... I think their older stuff is way better, though.

Slightly inappropriate...

I have only heard one AFI song 'The leaveing song part II', it has to be one of the most horrendous pieces of 'music' I have ever had the displeasure of hearing.

Yes, it's off-topic, but I felt it was necessary since the thread had already gone off-topic anyway.

And to bring this back on-topic:

I really enjoy AFI's new album, Decemberunderground. I also like their older work, but I find some of the in between stuff to be not to my liking.

What about The Last Kiss, HUH?! That song rocks.

But really, it does. I think that sing the sorrow, for the most part, is overly dramatic and a little annoying. A few good songs are on it, though.
Furthermore, that they still call themselves 'Hardcore Punk Revivalists" is ridiculous. If anything, they're fringing on emocore.

Meh. I have yet to hear decemberunderground. I hope it's better.

I love their "Nitro Years" as titled in the compilation album, but once "Sing the Sorrow" hit production, things went downhill fast. I still like some of their more recent music, but most of it just feels dull and generic to me now, like the band changed up their sound to be more accessible.

But seriously, man... Goths can listen to Manson, HIM, Cradle of Filth, Evanescence, and still be goth. Just as someone can listen to Christian Death, Siouxsie, Bauhaus, Specimen, and Joy Division and NOT be goth. It isn't about the music.

Oh, I forgot to add this. I love My Chemical Romance to death! They're not goth, though, and I will never claim them to be. If I can listen to something as mainstream and stereotypical as that, but still not be mainstream and stereotypical, what does that say? It says... I like music for the music, not the hype.

My Bad.
While I'm here I would like to issue a point of reference to my dislike of AFI... I not only like Throbbing Gristle and Nurse with Wound but I thoroughly enjoy listening to it. If a band can sound worse than something intentionally designed to sound ear-bleedingly-horrible it must be doing something wrong.
I don't care if they have beautiful lyrics or what genre they fit into(I personally wouldn'y give them the pleasure of being regarded as music), they sound terrible.

I really can't stand Miss Murder. In the context of Decemberunderground it just doesn't fit in. Not in my interpretation anyway. The only songs I truly love off the album are Love Like Winter and 37mm. I despised them all at first, but one by one they're starting to grow on me. No matter how much I try to push AFI away Davey's voice still manages to claw its whiney little way back into my weak little heart.

And Happy_Dude: If I'd only heard The Leaving Song Pt. II I would have exactly the same opinion of AFI as you. That song was to STS what Miss Murder is to Decemberunderground.
