kumquat
vociferous (I love this word, especially when someone actually uses it correctly - it means making, given to, or marked by noisy and vehement outcry.)
splendid
rhyncocephalian (I chose this one for a grade school spelling test when I was, like, 8 years old - it means of or belonging to the Rhynchocephalia, an order of mostly extinct lizardlike reptiles that includes the tuatara. There are only two families of lizards in the order, both of which live in New Zealand.)
exanimate
quixotic
cream
verbose
eriudite
crisp

Mostly, I just like how these all sound. I probably have others I like better, but I can't think of them just now.

Oh, and I also like the word Archaeopteryx. I didn't know how to pronounce it until I was in Junior High, so I feel smart when I say it.

Arabesque - Music. An ornate, whimsical composition especially for piano. / A ballet position in which the dancer bends forward while standing on one straight leg with the arm extended forward and the other arm and leg extended backward.

Bourgeoisie - the explotative middle class/middle class people.

Bovine - displaying the slowness regarded as typical of cattle and related animals.

Coquette - a flirtatious woman

Catharsis - A release of emotional tension, as after an overwhelming experience, that restores or refreshes the spirit.

Figurante - A female figurant; esp. a ballet dancer

Licentious - Lacking moral discipline or ignoring legal restraint, especially in sexual conduct.

Misanthropic - 1. Of, relating to, or characteristic of a misanthrope.
2. Characterized by a hatred or mistrustful scorn for humankind.

Opulent - Possessing or exhibiting great wealth; affluent.

Virulent (obviously).

I think there should be more allowed, but there's my ten.

10 & then...heh

seems as though this thread has gained some inertia the past few months!
i haven't really scrutinized this thread very thoroughly, but i am quite impressed with the verbosity that exudes from this crowd! seeing all these words has me champing at the bit, so to speak, so off i go:

(i will delve deeply into my bag o' tricks and try to think of some words that i don't expect have been used yet in this thread - also, i am too lazy to consult a dictionary, so i will attempt to paraphrase my own definitions from memory)

1) inertia - the kinetic energy possessed by an object in motion
i like the fact that the word "inert" dominates this word; i suppose it could be described as.......

2) counterintuitive - seeming to go against common sense

3) potentate - one who rules over others, or is otherwise in a...
3a) plenipotentiary position.

4) dissonance - an unsettling effect produced by closely associated elements which interfere, or "disagree" with each other - usually used to describe a displeasing combination of musical tones. an example of "cognitive dissonance"(LOVE that phrase) would be the experience of a thirsty person who just took a big gulp of gin, thinking it was water.

5) hypergamy - the practice of choosing a mate based on his or her class in society, for the purpose of increasing one's social standing - "marrying above one's station"

6) sycophant - i happen to remember the exact definition as being "a servile, self-seeking flatterer" - a good example of one is that pale dude with the lisp in the LOTR movie, who had the King of Rohan under a spell, because even though he was always full of praise and the appearance of genuine servitude for the king, it was hollow praise, calculated at achieving his own less-than-laudable aims.

7) sibilant - a consonant whose sound is created by the tightly controlled expulsion of air, such as "S", or the sound of such a consonant - sibilants are widely known to be used when testing the levels of a microphone, since they they are second only to "aspirant" sounds, like H.

8) tesseract - AKA "4-cube" or "hypercube" - a shape which could theoretically exist in the 4th geometrical dimension after folding 8 cubes @ right angles which are not parallel, to the z, y, or z-axis, but perpendicular, of course, to at least one axis.. (it's easier to understand than it seems, trust me) : now, a 2-dimensional square has 4 sides, which are 1-dimensional lines, folded @ right angles onto the y-axis....a 3-dimensonal cube has 6 sides which are 2-dimensional squares, folded @ right angles onto the z-axis....therefore, a tesseract has 8 sides, each of which is a cube, and is folded @ right angles onto the theoretical 4th axis(whatever comes after z, heh). someday, i'd like to get a tattoo of a tesseract.

9) exacerbate - to amplify the quality of a pre-existing condition to an increased magnitude (particularly describing the aggravation of a bad condition or malady, such as exacerbating a poison oak reaction by scratching it.

10) agnosticism - happens to be my religious alignment; "agnostic" literally means "ignorant" in Greek, and that is what i am(and what i believe all people are ) in regards to the possible existence of a supreme being/prime mover/divine architect - basically, how the hell are we suppoed to know one way or the other? heh heh
(rhetorical question) ahhhhhh, i can't resist two more:

10a) rhetorical - for the purpose of rhetoric; basically, making a point circuitously, by means of forming a question with the rhetoric instead of a declarative statement.

10b) asymptotic - a quality of irrational numbers, or better yet, infinite series, such as Zeno's paradox with Achilles & the tortoise, where it seems as though Achilles can never quite catch up all the way to the tortoise - a graphical representation of the distance between the two, using Cartesian coordinates, would be the graph of an asymptote: a line which curves closer & closer to one or both axes, but apparently never quite reaches(although i'm pretty sure this whole conundrum was solved by the use of infinite sums, using the Greek letter sigma to notate them.

Ten words eh?

I have the tendancy to speak with a viewpoint few understand. Each description carries with it a sensation, to truly understand my words, you must feel their meaning. Give it a try.

1)Black-The essence of negativity, yin, passivity, and the night.

2)Undead-What once was, is no more, what was no more, is again.

3)Cold-The bite of winter and the feeling of a tattered love, one and the same.

4)Vengence-I dont care what it does to me, I only care what I do to them.

5)Battle-An internal conversation between two people.

6)Eviscerate-Stabbing sometimes isnt enough to get a point across, occasionally you ned to drag the blade across to get results.

7)Spell-What use is a blade to one who destroys armies with a word?

8)Interrogate-The easy way, or the hard way?

9)Dalliance-boyfriend and girlfriend are labels, I hate labels, I just want to have fun.

10)Skulk-Why make a slaughter when only your target need suffer?

1. Vermiculated - because it's just plain fun to say
2. Dude - because you can have full conversations with people using this word and this word alone.
3. Mississippi - because when I learned to spell this in kindergarten I thought it was just so awesome (of course, back then, my classmates and I though of Mississippi as the longest word in the dictionary).
4. Cloak-and-dagger - one of my favorite adjectives, reminds me of all the fantasy stories I used to read when I was younger
5. Edentulous - because when I first learned this word, it made me feel smart to describe a few of my neighbors as "the edentulous couple across the street".
6. Monstresacrá - because it sounds like "monstrosity" but has a totally different meaning
7. Muchopolysaccharide - another word that is just plain fun to say
8. Spiral - my favorite shape
9. Yellow-ish - I add "ish" to a lot of adjectives, and this one is actually in the dictionary.
10. Caramel - my favorite kind of candy

Don't keep us in suspense then - what does it mean? It's not in any dictionary I have access to...

Hah, a Monstresacré is a public person who is considered to be above criticism despite eccentric behavior, controvery, etc. Heh, I just realized I used an "a" instead of an "e" originally, sorry 'bout that.
