I had my knives brandished right when I read the title of this post.

First off: Why the fuck are you making such a pointless thread and taking up space?

Secondly: Don't EVER dismantle such a great man's name!
Edgar Allan Poe was a poet, a play right, essayist, editor, critic, and short story writer and did an amazing job at all of them. More than you or anyone else will ever be able to do. Poe was an extremely influencial man, his plays being reenacted constantly and so many present day authors striving to recreate his style. Don't molest the name of such a great person. Really: Idiot.

By the way, do you happen to be Duckman's spawn?

Okay then. That may be all YOU can say about him but the truth does not base itself on your descriptions.

Truth being subjective, yes, truth does base itself on my descriptions. Facts base themselves on themselves: The truth of his writing is in the eye of the beholder. My tastes dictate that he is OK.

The truth of him as a man lies in his biography with the facts- and how yo usee him after reading them.

Fact: Many people rever Poe for not other reason than they are taught to do so. Moreso for his life than for his art.

Truth: Boccaccio should be revered the same way, but most people cannot even pronouce his name

I can pronounce his name...

I have read a few biographies of Poe's life and so hence my saying that he is a great man and not simply an amazing literary figure. I was never taught by anyone to 'revere' Poe. I found a book of his poems at a garage sale while I was in fifth grade and I fell in love with the writing myself: no assembly required.

And I was force fed Poe's work from an early age. Most people in the US are between grades 9 through 10. (not certain what age or location you are, don't want to assume we have the same background, ya know?); and I read his bio on my own time. Funny how we often pain the art flavored with what we know of the artist?

Maybe I'd liek him more if I did not read his bio...I do like some of his works, most notably his poem Annabel Lee; but for the most part... Poe? eh.

More of a Shelley and Byron gal m'self. And Boccaccio XD

I like Poe. I don't love him, I just generally enjoy his works.

I should go visit his grave, now that I think about him. It's not too far from me. It might be fun.

Byron? Ugh. I think I like only about a quarter of all that he wrote.

I like Frost a lot myself. Especially that "Fire and Ice" bit.

I like Seuss too. My theatre group did Seussical just this spring. Was the most fun we'd had in a while.

You're making yourself look silly.
Poe was NOT a great man. What about him was great? His talent...that's pretty much it. He was a drunk and a coward.

It's playwright, you fool.

The talent of artists, writers, poets, musicians, and so forth is very subjective and difficult to argue for and against.

Though I must admit I enjoyed the Decameron a lot more than Poe's works. But I'm also very much a medieval history nerd, so I'm pretty biased in that respect.

I enjoy reading his works, but I don't believe he was a "great man." He was just very talented.
