Goth/Punk Fake?
Sometimes I feel like its all bullshit....
People who talk shit about the mainstream and all that shit and then spend 2 hours trying to get their racoon eyes just right.. People who dont give a fuck what anyone else thinks yet try soooo hard to maintain their goth/punk appearance..... What ever happened to just throwing on some clothes and going? Im not saying its bad to care about your appearance, but damn it just feels so fake sometimes.....
I might look at one of the artists I like and just feel they suck for trying so hard to look "goth" or "punk" etc... I noticed that somtimes if Im going somewhere I might try harder than normal to look a certain way.....
Is it so important tht EVERYONE know you are goth/punk/insert relavent subculture..........
There are artists that I like and I feel are very authentic and real, they dont seem to try to look anyway they just coe looking however they are.... And others bash the band because they are not "goth" or are not hardcore.underground enough............
Spen hours on getting your hair and makeup perfect change your clothes 50 times before you actually leave the house and then talk about how you are sucj a non conformist or how you dont giev a shit about what anyone else thinks....................... Recently I've stoped really trying... I like makeup but its not worth sooo much time.. I just smear the crap on and put ont whatever i feel like wearing that day......
EVen more so then goth I think this would apply to allot of what "punks" (or at leats the ones i know) say.

I agree to this almost completely. But it doesn't always apply to looks per say. It's attitude that irks me the most.

I will admit, when I was younger, I was a bit like this. But I found I soon grew out of it because, just like you said, EVERYONE doesn't need to know, and you DON'T need to announce to the whole world. Be yourself, there's nothing wrong with that.

I suppose yes, you are right. It is normally the younger generation that is worried about this. I have NEVER seen anyone 40 + that was into any sort of alternative lifestyle that worried about proving it to everyone.

Some people just want to spend hours on makeup. It has less to do with others than it does with themselves.

Ophelia is pretty much right. Plus, my make up has gotten way damn better and it takes me nearly less than 20 minutes to get it all taken care of. So what?
It's like this. To dress goth/punk to prove you are is one thing that says you try too hard. To dress that way because well... you just want to and you feel nice in it, then it's a different thing all together.

To quote Frank Zappa, "You Are What You Is"
I don't put on make-up that often, I don't always dress in black, and my hair is whatever i feel like that day. It's a state of mind, not a fashion statement.

Non-conformism has nothing to do with not caring about your appearance.

Theres nothing wrong with looking how you want to look. It's when you start thinking that your appearance is who you are that it matters.

I third and fourth that, because I agree THAT much. My god It makes me ashamed to be in my teenager years, because most teens really do at least seem to think you are what you wear. No I get it, you choose how you look (style wise) but it really isn't WHAT you are.

I don't see nothing wrong in trying to get a certain look, and spending time on it. If that's what you fancy then by all means go for your life. Fortunatly I am blessed with naturally pale skin I dye my hair black and get the look a I want. I apply eye shadow and that's about all.

I'm pretty blessed too, but because of my paleness I burn EXTREMELY easily. It's actually pretty silly how I get red from mere 5 minutes in moderate sun. Don't believe me? Lets hang out.

I usually just throw on some black/red/white clothing that looks goth-ish. I only spend about 5 minutes on make-up before I am out the door. I agree with you. Goth isn't all about fashion, it's about the mind as well.

You're not your fucking khakis. But your kahkis are an extension of who you are.

There is nothing wrong with putting effort into your appearance. How I present myself is a form of expression. Not an advertisement.

Im just saying spending 3 hours putting makeup on is waY TOO LONG....
And sometimes I feel like people are fake. Like im not getting the real them but something they created with many hours of internet shoping and heavy duty paint etc....
It seems like more and more you are "not goth" unless you do stuff like that. Like people believe that what its all about.. If your willing to spend that much of your life in front of a mirror go ahead. Im just wondering why its soooo imprtant to some people......
What are your motives for spending all that time on looking "goth" or even just makeup in general.... Unless Its halloween or im doing something inparticular i wont send more than 20 minutes on my hair and makeup... cuz I would rather spend my time where ever I going then spend my time preping to go there............

So somehow you spending 20 minutes on make-up makes you less 'fake' and more 'goth' than someone who spends an hour on theirs? Or is the borderline right at the three hour mark?
It takes me anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half to get ready depending on what I'm doing. There are plenty of time consuming factors such as showering, shaving, drawing in eyebrows, straightening hair, backcoming hair, blending shadows, wardrobe decisions, whatever. I don't like looking like a slob regardless if I'm decked out in business attire, or pvc and platform boots.

That they could be showing you something they're not is a good argument, but what if that's part of who they are?
