Final Fantasy VII
Since there isn't one, I tough I'd start a thread about this game.
I know I'm gonna get a lot of shit for this, but i have to say that it is my personal opinion that the story of FF VII could easily stand against Lord Of The Rings and all the other FF's combined.
Anyway, tell me what you think.

In story, Final Fantasy X is much, much, better than VII. But the characters are better on VII, except for the one that dies whose name I forget.

FF VII is a mediocre FF game, in my opinion. The only thing that made it stand out from the others was the fact that it was the first with 3D graphics, and that only lasted until FF VIII came out. Now the only thing that really stands out about it is the horrible, and often inconsistent, graphics.

Shitty plot devices ("LOL AMNESIA") and flat-ass characters over what is debatably the greatest fantasy epic of all time? I think not.

The thing is that FF7 is when most people started playing FF.

I like FFVII personally, but I wouldn't dare compare it to J.R.R Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy--it just doesn't hold a candle to it.
Anyway, I liked some of the characters in FFVII (Tifa Lockhart namely), but if you really looked past the at-the-time awesome graphics, all there really is is a story that's been done to death in several other medias. Despairing dude with amnesia who slowly submerges himself in the dark, bitter depths of his mind, which leads to his eventual insanity; only when he's hit rock bottom, does he have an epiphany of sorts and realizes: Holy shit, I'm a fucking clone of some super-powerful dude! Noooo!
It's kind of like in Jacob's Ladder when he realizes he was dead all along. Somewhat, anyway.
And Jillian, the one you're thinking of is Aeris.

I'm a bit of a die hard gamer of the 16-bit era so I choose Final Fantasy 6 as epic. It truely did amazing things for the hardware capabilities it had to deal with. I mean, the opera scene was kind of cheesey but it was so cool how they pulled it off. But I do second the opinion of Final Fantasy 7 having a higher nostalgia value for it being one of the first "main stream" Final Fantasies.
Best Regards,
Neil

FFVII was my childhood friend. The story is one of my favorites as well. I love how you were able to relate to the characters, even though they were so....fantastic..

Turns out it was neither. But I'd paid a load of money for it, and ended up enjoying it almost as much as I would have had it been porn.

Porn's kinda gross. Wet slimy sausage thingies and mutilated tofu chunks...
FFVII was much better than porn.

And you are full of it. I refuse to believe that people don't look at porn. I've even found porn on the computers of the most hardcore feminists and religious types.

Dude, I was joking.
Do I seem like one of those hypocritically pious types with a stash of child porn in the back room?

Played it... 'twas okay I guess and this is comparing it with otherFF's i've played which are;
3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,10-2,12, 12:Revenant, Tactics, Tactics: advance, Mystic Quest
And the list goes on.
I'd have to say the most intriguing one story wise would be 12 but that's probably because I haven't finished it yet, so it's the drive to know more!
8 however has some of the most lovely and amazing music ever, probably my favourite FF in terms of Audio
and no matter how new and great 12 is supposedly, I enjoyed 10's grpahics more.
On that note, 7 is pretty damn mediocre compared to quite a few FF's, new and old.
Though I would rate it higher on the FF scale than 3

VII has always been my favourite, story line wasn't that great but I liked all of the characters and I enjoyed the gameplay. Most of the characters in VIII really annoyed me (Squall, Zell, Irvine and seifer being the worst) and I didn't even bother finishing IX it was so bad.
Didn't enjoy X much but for some reason I really liked X-2.
Overall I'd say that VII is somewhat over rated but there are a few reasons why It's so well liked.
The characters were great, sure many of them were rather flat as gothicusmaximus pointed out and it was almost impossible to play without imagining Barret saying "Ah pity the fool" or “Ah ain't gettin on no airship!" but they were all very likeable.
The other ting is that not only was it the first Final Fantasy many played but also the first Japanese style RPG, that certainly counts for lot in terms of nostalgia.
Even though I do feel it's over rated, it is the best of all of the Final Fantasy games I've played.

Personally I liked the characters and storyline of FFVI much better than FFVII. Currently I own most of the Final Fantasy games excluding 9 and 11, and to me 7 was one of the weaker FF games.
What I wouldn't do to own a complete remake of FFI - FFVI...

To be really honest, I had played a few FF's before Seven, though I hadn't completed them except for Mystic Quest, which was my first -- how bloody ironic that the easiest is my first. Anyway, when I really think about it, there are only three things about Seven that still stand out in my mind from the others in the series. One, whenever I think of Seven, the first thing that pops up is the Gold Saucer. Seriously. I don't know why, I just do. Two, despite having little depth to them, the characters in this game were rather memorable and compelling in their own flawed way. Three, Aeris fucking dies. Sure, Tidus in Ten died, too, and his death was a lot more tragic and heart-wrenching, and in turn much more satisfying, but the tramp's death was a twist I was glad I hadn't seen coming.
So, yeah, if it weren't for those three things, I wouldn't even think about Seven anymore. Even the movie was something of a disappointment -- pretty but confusing, corny and shallow.

I like VII, because I think that Sephiroth actually was a pretty good villain.
I am not in love with VII, or with Final Fantasy, but I did get the computer version of it, and I have to say that I was very disappointed in the ending.
See, by the end of the game I'd grown to hate Cloud so much that I would have happily stabbed the little creep myself.
