I love the mix of steampunk and goth. I'm currently tinkering with some new goggles and eye wear.

I was at a Con and MTV Interviewed me =p Even though I look dorky in the video , it was fun.

I mix and match Victorian, Steampunk and Goth randomly when I feel like it.

No. Olive brown and black. It's like cyberpunk would be if it wasn't all about synthetic dreads and bad techno. A lot of steampunks (the ones that dress like that everyday) actually look like demented rivetheads, minus the bad haircuts. And they're both supposed to be dystopian anachronisms.

Here's the link to the video and photos. It was a fun Con, even though it was very small.

I'm not much of a fan of Abney Park, myself. They rely entirely on their look. Just listening to their music doesn't make me think of the Victorian era at all, let alone a strange world where clockwork technology was carried out to its fullest extent.

As far as dressing steampunk, I usually satisfy myself with old-style clothing and heavy leather boots. I don't have the requisite skill to actually make specialized clothing. Even if I did, I'm not sure I'd have the patience.

Apparently.

Also, I agree with the article that twistedsyn posted, when its author wrote about steampunk having a sound that can be similar to acts like Tom Waits and Rasputina. I actually commented on an Abney Park youtube video almost a year ago saying that same thing. I did, however, substitute Zoe Keating, one of Rasputina's former cellists, for Rasputina itself. Sadly, the comment was taken down almost immediately. I guess I offended someone.

To each their own. If they put on a good show, I say more power to 'em. Their music is just not my cup of tea. And a fancy cup it is, what with all the gears and levers attached to it.

No I actually got it off Ebay, under the seller Madd Hatter, it was only about $75.00 and its very well made.

I made the Mono-goggle myself though and the steampunk glasses on the tophat .

Definitely cool-looking stuff. Well done! I especially liked the Ace of Spades and the Joker cards stuck in the hatband. Nice touch.

It looks very cool but is hardly functional in public. I can imagine dressing like this for Halloween or maybe a concert. It's a cool premise. I don't think it's a successful form of everyday fashion though.

Corsets? Actually there are designers out there that have everyday corsets and clothing. Not as tight-laced as normal corsets but still nice with the same look.

No. I was making a general statement. The steampunk fashion of gears and steal plated clothing. It's awesome but I wouldn't dress like it on a daily basis.

Neither is goth. Who the fuck wears a leather trenchcoat in the middle of summer?

Rasputina is the most steampunk band I can think of. Frustration Plantation ftw. Oddly, every other band I think of is dark cabaret: Tom Waits, Jill Tracy, the Dresden Dolls, Vermillion Lies, Harlequin Jones, Humanwine.

Abney Park sucks.

Compared to this its completely reasonable.

Goth fashion can be weather sensible. Steampunk looks weird on an entirely different level.

Steampunk is kind of like haute couture, really amazing when worn at the proper place and time, but otherwise quite ridiculous

People who engage in Steampunk as a fashion choice are always LARPers - sad, pathetic nerds who think they can use Goth clubs as an outlet for their socially awkward nerdom...

I hate the way the girls are always fat and the guys don't know how to shave... plus their taste in fashion is terrible, and they never wear anything that fits them.

That can apply to a massive section of the goth subculture.

I used to like it in a way.
Until every goth/deathrock site/magazine/e-zine had an article or column on it.

It doesn't have it's own music.
Music people call steampunk is just another genre dolled up in goggles and a top hat.

They're not goths.

They're nerds who think they're goths.

There is a difference.

Why do you all keep trying to defend steampunk with goth? It shouldn't be an issue. You might as well be saying "Well look at how Gangsters dress or look at how sports fans dress?". It is beside the point.

If you're going to defend steampunk then defend it based off it's admirable qualities. If it has any.
