Oh and I'm a cheap skate so preferably free programs.

http://keepvid.com/
Go to keepvid dot com, and install the toolbar, then when you see a youtube vid you like you just click on "Keep it" and it downloads the vid as whatever filename you give it, with a .flv extension, then any flashvideo player you download for free will play it.
Be careful of which flash player you choose, some have viruses. Scan everything first.

KeepVid dot com lets you choose mp4 or FLV.

It wont work on some of the sites, I use a bunch of sites for TV shows and movies, I'm probably going to have to have a stand alone program to record it on screen or something to that extent.

sites that don't work are using flash players and the link its at isn't the actual video link. We does it always have to be a pain in the ass. nothing is easy anymore.

You don't want video capturing software. You want a way of downloading youtube videos.
Try http://www.file2hd.com, I use this quite a lot and it's always worked perfectly.

*sigh* no, let me put it differently.
Youtube can kiss my ass as far as I'm concerned, I rarely need shit off it.
I want to be able to record whats on my screen, or parts of my screen, when watching videos from site. Most of the sites (and yes a couple are porn site, so what, got a problem) I visit wont work on those you guys gave me cause the links are not valid to the video so I need to actually record whats on my screen.
I tried on called cam studio but it screws up and doesn't record 90% of the time and the other 10% it record but looks like shit no matter what codec I'm using.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the help but it seems like your missing what I mean.

Do you use Firefox? If you do, get Download Helper. It'll do what you want it to do.

how about Jing project?
I hear good things about it, though simple and I think you can only capture 5 minutes it would be worth checking into.

pal, if you want videos from youtube and a few other sites, copy the url for the video you want and paste it into this site:
http://keepvid.com/
It will get the video and give you the option of letting you save it as a small .flv video or a big .mp4 file
Hope this helps.

Humanepain Already suggested keepvid, Harlow wants something that records directly from his screen, as opposed to something that downloads the file.
