You couldn't have just looked around yourself?

Whatever. Try the Bolshoi, they're good.

Good Lord! Manson, Slipknot or HIM? I don't mean to be a snob, or a stuffy old fogey... But where, along the way, did people start forgetting was Gothic rock is and begin equating it with new metal, emo, etc?

So here we go... Siouxsie, Bauhaus, Play Dead, Sex Gang Children, Red Lorry, etc... a very particular brand of late 70s/early 80s post-punk also known at the time as positive-punk... this is true goth. It's an off-shoot of punk, really. And the music was BEAUTIFUL. Influenced by psychedelia, punk and even prog. Dark gloomy imagery, in the artwork and band look. But smart, always pushing the envelope.

Manson, HIM, Evanescence, Alkaline Trio, My Chemical Romance, etc... are just NOT goth. I'm not saying these bands might not enjoy gothic rock or have been influenced by it in some way.... but to call them "goth" is stretching it, no?

Just my two cents.

Some people complain that She Wants Revenge have too derivative a sound, but as Joy Division won't be making any more music, I'll take what I can get. Are they goth? Not strictly, but I like them.

Pay no mind, I think Cosmicgaunt is just being a bit of a tool.... Peter Murphy of Bauhaus himself has been quoted as saying the band "sparked off the latter-day Gothic movement" and even Siouxsie who used to be disdainful of the title "goth" fully embraced it in a magazine cover story years later.

I recall reading an amusing post describing all of the alternative genres that Bauhaus and other Goth bands would fall under, but now that I actually want to re-read it, I cannot find it anywhere.

Dali's Car is gawfer than Blauhaus, anyway. : P

It's true, most of the really talented bands that started the movement were really all over the place musically, and didn't want to be lumped into one scene the press dubbed "goth"... but the name stuck. I think to appear musically credible you kinda had to slag off the goth title, Cure, Siouxsie, Sisters, Bauhaus all did at one time or another.... they had to distance themselves from what the press considered silly gits plying on make-up and playing vampire...

Seriously? I liked them the first time I heard them, and it's disappointing to imagine them not having more fans.

By the way, your avatar is, naturally, gorgeous.
