Fashion DIY tips and gratuitous plugs. And hair. Hair! Flow it, show it. Wait...no. That's some hippie musical. Nevermind. |

When done right it's pretty bloody hilarious. I approve of it in the same way I approve of any garish or interesting fashion, as long as it does not stagnate.

^ I agree, but I can also see how it isn't for everyone. Also, it looks very strange when anyone who isn't Asian tries to imitate it, IMHO.

I will agree with that; Visual Kei goes with asian features... anyone else the nose is too big, the lips wrong, eyes wrong, etc. You have to have sort of an impish or young looking face to pull it off.

Oh! And the right texture of hair - the hairstyles just don't work on fine hair (like mine, le sigh). I do like the look though, it's very dramatic.

I think the fashion sucks as bad as the music. I'm not trying to troll the thread that's just my honest take on it. I collect some dolls from Japan and just about everyone on those type of boards is either a Visual Kei or Yaoi fangirl from America.
The bands are basically the Madonnas/Lady Gagas of Japan.
HATE!

Have you ever heard Dir En Grey? Listen to Embryo, Obscure, Glass Skin, etc... amazing stuff.

My hair is thin and strait, works pretty well for me. The trick is hair gel.

Oh yeah, the music is usually pretty generic and terrible but I can always get behind big hair and androgyny.

I agree with the music being generic and terrible. The fashion is just as bad.

I'll admit, I'm not a huge fan of the music either. But I could stare at pics of it all day! =D
It's cool if it isn't your thing.

It's pop materialism without the mainstream money. Unless we are talking about Japan in particular, then it's really just pop shit.

So far I haven't done anything too drastic.
I have very long black hair, and yesterday I cut my bangs so they were jagged and would hang around my face.

All you need is hair spray and a rat tail comb. Tease the living hell out of yur hair and spary the fuck out of it! If you try it on clean hair it's gonna fall right out, though.

Scene hair is very similar to Visual Kei, too.

I've long thought the whole visual kei style fascinating, even if the music is nothing that I've been able to develop an appreciation for. It appears to me to be the melding of operatic opulence and goth edginess. Unsurprisingly, I generally prefer the more historically-inspired costumes.
The idea of attempting the look for Halloween or some other event has occurred to me, what with being Asian and a costumer. However, I tend to aviod utilizing excessive amounts of hair product and makeup, both of which seem to be requisite here. Regardless, perhaps I shall try it someday.

It can be very pretty, although I often think it could use a bit more edge, which other than genderbending it tends to lack. Great when combined with goth, guro or similar influences.
Difficult to do right, though.
