I put too much honey in my coffee.

MissC, good on ya for taking in shelter and abused animals. Almost all of the ones I had in the past were given to us. My last cat was actually the grandson of a cat that was given to me as a kitten. A neighbor brought him over saying that they found him on the side of the road and his mom was dead. They gave me this tiny ball of orange fluff that was timid and scared. I stupidly did not get him neutered(actually, in that household the guys thought it was 'inhumane' to neuter a male and argued against it, they were fine with getting the females spayed) and he disappeared when he was only a little more than a year old. His daughter disappeared shortly after having the litter that included my last cat.

I don't believe in getting an animal from a breeder when there are lots of lovable pets waiting to be adopted in shelters. Plus, most of those places already spay/neuter, vax, and microchip them before they go home. And it's cheaper to adopt from a shelter than buying a pure bred and then paying all of the money to get the vax, spay and microchip(easily 2-3x what you would pay to adopt).

I know that guy. He's kind of a dick. Not that he's not good at what he does, but he's always pissed.

Honestly Jin, there's no quicker way to lose a cause than compare it to the holocaust. Factory farming is horrific! But comparing it to the holocaust is like the quickest way to lose your audience. Also, I can't take anyone associated with PeTA seriously. With their racism and sexism, how is that any better?

I wanna be brief because we've done the animal rights argument a million times before, but I know for the first while when you get into it you're extremely passionate, but I think keeping a clear head and being mindful of intersectionality is what is needed, being that kind of pissy and not caring about who you hurt for your cause will either turn you into a prick who scares away or burn you out. I think Gene Baur being kind and welcoming has done far more for animals than anyone who employs an any means necessary mentality.

He isn't associated with PETA anymore, he explained why in the lecture.

I may be biased since I'm new to this and all, but I don't think anything he's saying is unkind in the least. A holocaust is the "destruction or slaughter on a mass scale". How is this an exaggeration?

My bf who happens to be an extremely devout meat eater, listened to the whole lecture and is now considering going veg.

Ah, I'm wrong, he's no longer associated with PeTA. But he is a psychotic misanthrope.

I used to really like the "abolitionist" stuff, it got me sucked in too. But I know lots of people who said they took a long time going vegan because people like that scared them away.

ETA: I think by using the word "holocaust" the invokation of THE holocaust is clear and its an intentional comparison. And its not apt, because we breed these animals by the billions, we give them life and take it away, these cows and chickens wouldn't be there in the first place if we didn't consider them commodities.

I dunno why it would scare anyone away. But maybe that just has to do with my personality.

It's true, he's a misanthrope. But his argument is still pretty solid. In any case there are better animal rights activists out there, including his friend and my professor Steven Best - slightly less misanthropic, just as, if not more, radical.

I guess that raises a question. Most people eat meat, vegetarians are vastly outnumbered. Can we perpetrate violence against all the meat eaters to the point where they will stop? Can we tell them they deserve to be rraped and compare them to Nazis and still earn their cooperation?

No of course not. But I truly don't feel like Gary was trying to tell all those kids that they were Nazis, in comparing factory farms to a holocaust.

Its a comparison I heard in abolitionist circles, I liked Earthlings generally but the Holocaust analogy was admittedly blatant, quoting "When it comes to animals, all men are Nazis."

Also, activists are always going to attract different crowds. I'm sure Gary has convinced many people to go vegan. Same goes for Baur. Ya know?

I personally am more attracted to people who yell here and there.
