Hostle... Well, I've spent 90 some minutes doing some more brain numbing activities, but those weren't voluntary. I am ashamed and feel robbed.

Thank you for that input. Was wondering whether it was much different from the "Saw" series.

a few recent ones....

"Abducted By Daleks"-3 words "oh" "my" "GOD!!!". Why those three words? Try these three on for size- "Doctor" "Who" "Porn" (though the doctor never makes an appearance, the Daleks sure do). Basically three girls are driving through a forest and end up kidnapped and molested by the Daleks. Like all great British exploitation from the 70's, this one's got crappy camera work, crappy editing, and hot chicks with bad dentistry running around naked and screaming. However.....fucking Daleks!!! My mind is buldging "OUCH"! However, I'm sure Al and EPS are gonna run out for it soon.

"Bareback"....err....."Brokeback Mountain"-(actually, saw it again, so this now 4 times) John Waynes personal life aside, movies about cowboys were always a bit coy about the most obvious of elements in Westerns-latent homoeroticism (and really, what could be queerer than a cowboy? Cops and soldiers aside?).

Now, a story about fag cowboys could very easilly devolve into any of these horrible descriptions-"queer cinema", "melodrama", "post-modern western". However, the film deftly stays above any kind of descriptive one could throw out, and instead becomes....well, like nothing that came before it.

What keeps this film on the tightrope that it walks is the perfection of the collaboration. From Ang Lee's dead-perfect direction, to the (justly) lauded performances of Heath Ledger and Jake Gillenhall as the star-crossed lovers, to Rodrigo Pieto's poetic cinematography (never has nature looked so hypnotically menacing and embracing at the same time), to the story by Ann Proulx and the screen adaption by Larry (fucking "Lonesome Dove"!!!!) McMurtry, a balance is acheived that keeps the film on track and moving foreward rather than imploding on its own talents.

Now, looking over the credits one would expect some well-meaning but boring tripe. Let me assure you that no, this is the best love story ever put on screen by an american (sorry, but Wong Kar Wei makes the best love stories ever). Lee and company pull no punches, either emotionally or logically, and what we have is the perfect realisation of all that queer cinema has promised, yet never delivered-a truly transcendent love story that doesn't require any kind of queer identity to get. All this, and hot fucking from the stars, too (oh yes, Lee REALLY pulled no punches).

"Munich"-I want to start this off by talking about the greatness of Steven Soderbergh, who has gone from indie maverick to the hippest director in America who's somehow able to get big name stars to act in his films. Soderbergh's astute love of cinema, and his willingness to play (and not take "film-making" too seriously) has given us viewers a string of films that are challenging, fun, and ultimately cinemtic ("Sex, Lies, And Videotape", "Schizopolis", "The Limey", "Traffic", "Out Of Sight", "Erin Brokovich", the "Ocean's 11" remake).

Wait, didn't Steven Spielberg direct this?.

Spielbergh, the former king of popcorn cinema, has always had an unease with his "fun film-maker" reputation, and had always longed for what his buddy Martin Scorcese had-critical acclaim (while Scorcese had always wanted to have the shitloads of money Spielberg had). With "Color Purple", it looked like Spielberg was finally going to go for it. And whilst over the years he's known which side his bread was buttered, he had always returned to "mature" stories.

The problem was that at heart he isn't a "mature" storyteller. He's a guy who's at his best telling you tall tales and adventure stories, not stories with deep emotional contexts.

"Munich", his most mature work to date, also happens to be the least heartfelt. From it's "violence begets violence" message to its action scenes to the cardboard thin characterisations, one would think that this was perfect for Spielberg.

However, he wanted it to be more than a popcorn flick, so one watches it and keeps thinking about how it resembles other films....."The Limey"...."Traffic"....holy fuck, Spielberg, in order to make his most mature film, has subverted his own personality and openly become a follower of Soderberg.

Now, being a follower of Soderbergh isn't neccesarily a bad thing (it's worked out well for Clooney's two films), but let's face it, this is Spielberg. Say what you want about the childishness of his films, the man knows (or at least knew) how to make movies. "Jaws", "Close Encounters", "Indiana Jones", and (dare I say it? I dare) "E.T.". These are the works he'll be most cherished for ("Schindler's List" as well, but that's a film that succeeds DESPITE Spielbergs attempts). Hopefully, he'll remember that as well.

I just saw (or is it seen?) Hostel.

It was alright, although I expected more from Tarnantino.

I just watched I-Robots (or whatever). It was better than I thought it would be actually.

Tenet, you got it right. In that format it is "saw". When you add a helping verb it's "seen", as in, "I have seen.." Oh, and I didn't put the examples for you, I put them there for the geniuses that post on this board..

I saw a chinese film called 'The Promise'

It was really beautiful and the costumes were great.

It took me into a meldramatic fantasy world.

But I kinda got confused watching it because my chinese is very very very rusty.

Geisha-FYI, "2046" is actually a continuation of sorts (not a sequal per se) of Wong Kar Wei's "In The Mood For Love". Would really suggest "In The Mood....", or actually, anything Wong has made (in my estimation, he is one of the four greatest film-makers of all time-Charlie Chaplin, Francois Truffaut, and Nagisa Oshima are the other three, in case you're wondering).

As for "Lord Of War", would also suggest checking out "The Constant Gardener".

And skip "thumbsucker"....even with Tilda Swinton, it's not that good.

I recently saw Hostile *gah* (psst Tenet, Hostile had little to do with Tarantino, I think he merely snatched the pile of crap and brought it over here for US release... unless you ment your disappointed in his choice, then I take this entire () text back.)

Hoodwinked... Geisha.. Underworld and King Kong for the second time.
