But I was told the 'nik' came in like sputnik, referring to russians, because they were generally disliked.

Yeah, I think that the beatniks where around about 5-10yrs before the hippies.

Someone once told me that it was actually because the beatniks were a political movement and they felt "beaten". But then again, that could be a load of bulltish

Well, I'm packing up and moving along for a little while. I'll be offline after tomorrow for awhile because me and the Mr are bringing the Bump home for some family visits. We're heading out to Missouri, and then we'll hit LA. I will be back and posting in April.

Xng, that is correct. The Beat Generation was built on a culture based on Beat poetry and counter-culture writers. Jack Kerouac is probably the best known figure at the center of the movement. Allow me to quote the above referenced Wikipedia article:

And an additional clarifying line from the same article: The term Beatnik was coined by Herb Caen of the San Francisco Chronicle on April 2, 1958 as a derogatory term, and was probably a reference to the recent Russian satellite Sputnik.


My favorite book about the San Francisco hippie counter-culture of the 60's is Tom Wolfe's "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test". In it, the hippies clearly pay homage to Kerouac, Alan Ginsberg and the Beat Generation as the source and inspiration for their movement.

Interestingly enough, after 37 years of planning, producer/director Francis Ford Coppola is ready to bring Kerouac's seminal novel “On the Road” to the theatres. Stay tuned to JackKerouac.com for more details on the “On the Road” movie, including casting choices and release date information.

I so hate the weather right here. It's so unpredictable. This week, it was all sunny and great.And now there's a SAND storm and the sound of the wind is DEAFENING!!I just hate the goddamn ozone layer hole, changing all the climats like that!

Ok, I don't know what the point of this was...I'm so bored!

Between the two,Indie is an actual music division..
