Bleh, I can forgive most things about the stereotypical emo except when they do cut themselves, the stupid repetitive look, and their music.

You like pain and tell people you like pain because you hope to gain their attention. You want to be taken seriously? Learn how to spell

I must have blinked...

I'm going to post something I wrote for alt.gothic a few months ago:

I MUST HAVE BLINKED...

...and when I opened my eyes again, this thing they call 'Emo' went from
looking like wimpy indie rockers in plaid button-up shirts and horn-rimmed
glasses to suddenly looking almost exactly like Goth, only with completely
different and irrelevant musical accompaniment.

What happened when I wasn't looking?

So, since Emo is apparently the new Goth, does this mean the emo kids
will be taking all the heat off of us when the next Columbine-type-event
happens?

Will crappy shock-rock bands now be mistakenly labeled as "Emo" rather
than mistakenly labeled as "Goth"?

If the increased focus on emo will make the media forget that goth
exists, I'm all for it.

I could get to like these modern times.

I used to think the whole emo trend was kind of funny, up until I started being mistaken for an emo. Or no let me rephrase that, emo is a more popular word now so the uneducated can't even tell the differece between emo and goth. So now I'm angry, I didn't ask to be called that.

I don't like the music, but it would be hypocritical to insult them. I wouldn't want them to insult us.

Some of the "real" emo music is pretty good, we're talking Emotive Hardcore not pop-punk.

Also, heck, Glassjaw is a great band. The feelings are very genuine and strong, which is what I look for when I listen to music anyway.

If a song doesn't make me feel anything, then it's not worth my time.

I know a really nice guy who got the stereotypical haircut, girlpants, cuts himself and listens to Hawthorne Heights and claims it's ^real^ music.

Now listening to: Glassjaw - Pink Roses
Next song: From Autumn To Ashes - Short Stories With Tragic Endings

Yarly. My 2 cent.

I love that you differentiated among them.
I don't like either of those musical styles, but I like that people know where the lines of demarcation lie.

Exactly. That's the thing that annoys me; people always confuse this pop-punk music with being emo, simply because it's whiny. Grr.
I like punk music generally, and real emo music is so closely related to punk that it's a pretty good listen. Pop-punk, however, is poo.

BLASPHEMY!

You don't like fallout boy and Panic! At The disco!?!

Neither do I. Such blatant attempts to market emo annoy me, grr.
A guy said "cheer up emokid" to me when I was sitting on a stair listening to music, while waiting for a friend. Then I had a 5 min monologue about the history of the emo of the 80's and the difference yadayda and he was like: "oh, uhm", and just walked away with a confused look. 1-0 to me.

I'm with you there, SKot... (it pains me so much to capitalise that K, but I'll keep doing it...) A few years ago the band "Weezer " was a good example of emo - the music, the attitude and the look. Same goes for "Jimmy Eat World".

What connection does this have with the current trend known as emo, let alone Goth? How did this unjustified merging occur?
Wikipedia has a detailed article, but of course Wikipedia is limited in it's trustworthiness, but it's a good starting point. But it can't explain the new Emo "phenomenon". It does speculate that the term was "highjacked" to help sell "a new generation of major label music". Which seems like a cynical ploy, therefore very likely, since major music label are not known for their strong ethics.

Or he thought "Will she shut the fuck up? This is inconsequential, maybe she should know something useful like how to cook, or understand that pop-culture fades in and out and is rather inconsequential."
