Better a lawnmower than a person!
http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/07/25/....ap/index.html
MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (AP) -- A 56-year-old Milwaukee man is accused of shooting his lawn mower because it wouldn't start.
Keith Walendowski told police he felt he had a right to shoot his mower.
Keith Walendowski told police he felt he had a right to shoot his mower.
Keith Walendowski has been charged with felony possession of a short-barreled shotgun or rifle and misdemeanor disorderly conduct while armed.
According to the criminal complaint, Walendowski says he was angry because his Lawn Boy wouldn't start Wednesday morning.
He told police: "I can do that, it's my lawn mower and my yard so I can shoot it if I want."
A woman who lives at Walendowski's house reported the incident. She says he was intoxicated.
Walendowski could face up to an $11,000 fine and six years and three months in prison if convicted.
A call to Walendowski's home went unanswered

Heh, when I first heard it on the local news the other day I wasn't expecting it to go national. Welcome to the beer capital of America.

I thought about this too. I understand the charge for "felony possession" just fine; the only logic I could see behind "misdemeanor disorderly conduct while armed" is that it could have ricocheted and injured/killed others, if not himself.

*roflmafao* 'Nuff said, Americans are weird people. But seriously, who hasn't thought of doing such a thing to certain belongings? I mean, I often loudly threaten my laptop with a long drop and a sudden stop if it refuses to behave.

Lawnmowers have been openly held in slavery for a long time. The practise has been so accepted by mainstream society that they can even be bought at well-established places like Wal-Mart.
This injustice needs to stop! The abuse will only get worse if it is allowed to continue!

Well if someone thought he might shoot them its assault...and if my neighbor pulled a shot gun on his lawnmower I'd be pretty scared....then again my neighbor set his lawn on fire "by accident"

I want to shoot my lawn mower, too. I gave him $20, and he only did half the yard.

Yeah, thanks to over-zealous prosecutors in America, silly 'doubling up' laws exist, like in this case.
I had a mate there who had a similar experience.
He had a shotgun in his truck. He was taking it inside his house. He slipped on wet concrete and dropped the gun which discharged. No one was hurt, the blast hit the wall of his home, but it was bird shot so there was no real damage either.
Cops showed up, charged him with a felony - illegally discharging a firearm, improper use of a firearm, and of course felony use of a fire arm.
He had no criminal record, but due to state mandatory laws, anyone firing a gun in the city limits was automatically guilty of felony use of a firearm. Also, discharging a firearm is a seperate offense from improper use, so they always charge you with both whenever there is an offenses.
In the end, his father who was a police officer went to court and talked with the judge who threw it out, but not until after they spent $2,000 on a lawyer and made 4 trips to court for appearances over a 1 year period.
Ah, the American justice system.
