Naked Lunch

What the FUCK is this book about? I've read over 45 pages and I have no idea what I've just read.

It's a very convoluted and repulsive book, but I got a kick out of it. Burroughs wrote it using the "cut-up" method in which he spiced together text from a number of different manuscripts.

Loosely speaking, it's about the travels and encounters of a junky as he goes through the US, Mexico, Morocco, and the surreal "interzone."

Great book, great author. The cut-up method is brillant, but a bitch to get through at first (I read it at such a young age and had to re-read over it!)Visually it seemed nearly impossible at first for Cronenberg to direct it as a film! Thankfully he pulled it off.

If I hadn't read a summary before I read the book I'd have no clue what I was reading. Damnit.

Paranoid fantasies of control seen through the hallucinations of a junkie going through withdrawal. The political parties of the Interzone satirize the left, right and middle, and the medical profession are no better. (Burroughs had a bug up his ass about the medical profession, for reasons he partly explains in his preface.) Everybody in the book is addicted to either sex, drugs, or power - it's basically about the uses to which addiction can be put by the state. It can be tough going, but concentrate on the central themes and it'll begin to make more sense.
