I carry one of his famous tales for a purse, does that count? Click on link to reveal awesome, please.

Seriously, I dig him. I remember being about 15 or 16 and being bummed that I missed seeing his exhibition at San Diego State after seeing some of his work in a news article and moreso when he died.

Even once at Rite Aid, I was being rung up by a guy whose uncle had been a part of the exhibit by lending them a majority of his collection. The Inanimate Tragedy is so ridiculously awesome.

Was reading today about Edward Gorey and found it curious that he said in an interview that he did not see himself as neither gothic nor macabre - So I wonder what did he consider macabre? I think he was so far out on a branch that he saw the little worlds he created - vignettes of a version of a twisted, and yes macabre Edwardian /Anglophile world normal. At any rate I think the man was pure genius and was curious if others felt the same. Thank you for your responses thus far.

If you happen to lose that lunchbox, you've got two suspects. ;p
The box and also this have been perpetual residents of my blog's wishlist.

Mr. Gorey will always be remembered by me for his iconic opening sequence for the PBS Mystery! series. His ability to capture such melancholy, yet quirky moods with a mess of scribblings is quite admirable.

I have almost all of his books... my fave is still "The Doubtful Guest"...

"Inconveniently close to the drawing room door."

His books read like Morticia Addams' lullaby stories. I read them to my hubby in her voice
