All Pets Go to Heaven (news)
Pets Gaining Recognition in Places of Worship
Maryann Mott
for National Geographic News
October 6, 2006
At St. Francis Episcopal Church in Stamford, Connecticut, the pews are filled with some unlikely worshipers.
Dogs sit by their owners' sides and cats peer out from carriers during a monthly pet-friendly service.
Barks and purrs—or "prayer noises," as the church calls them—can be heard during the afternoon celebration of Eucharist, in which people receive communion and pets a special blessing.
The half-hour service focuses on the special relationships people have with their animals, says Rev. Mark Lingle.
"At our church there are a number of people who are single or who have lost a loved one, and their pet is one of their primary relationships," he said.
(See photos and get more information about domestic cats and dogs.)
The church's special service is part of a growing movement among places of worship, some of which not only recognize the human-animal bond but offer pet owners support and services almost unheard of a decade ago.
In addition to special blessings or regular church services, these places hold private pet memorials or burials and offer grief counseling to comfort members whose pets have died.
Dealing With Loss
Rabbi Neil Comess-Daniels of Beth Shir Sholom, a progressive reform Jewish synagogue in Santa Monica, California, says that when a pet dies, owners suffer the same grief as they would over the loss of a human.
For years he's made condolence calls or visits with members of his congregation whose pets have died. And after each service he says a prayer for members mourning the loss of an animal or human.

Cool! A bit weird, but definitely awesome for the devoted pet people.
I wonder if this minister and rabbi do funerals for the animals too? People do them for their own family, but that would be an interesting service too! I saw a dog marriage ceremony on TV once, but those people were a bit...weird.

This made me laugh so hard I choked. Please don't get me wrong. Just the way it was writen...there are so many people dieing terrible deaths all over the world and other people spend time worrying about those that have lost a PET?
And also, instead of integrating this into a church service, why not make self-help psychologic thearapy groups or something of the sort? I thought the church was to keep up tradition and to hold the connection to the sacred and not to worry about those that have pets.
Please forgive me if I have offended anyone....or anyone's pet.

That is very interesting. I understand that it is terribly difficult to lose a beloved pet and truly do not mean to put aside that sort of grief.
However in my opinion this does not at all match the depth of sorrow caused by the loss of a loved one.
Also, I do not believe that animal sounds should be touted as spiritual elements of worship. If it were me, I would find the noise distracting. Thankfully this "pet service" only occurs once a month in the aforementioned church.
I love animals, but personally find the idea somewhat strange. To each his own...

hey an animal's an animal
the only differance between a "pet" and "food" is the way it's treated

Yes, but I only eat certain animals If I had a choice, then chicken would be the only meat I eat. That and turkey.

Oh, man, the LAST thing we need is a big argument about the morals and ethics of vegitarianism vs. meat-eaters.
It's all well and good that vegitarians and vegans don't want to eat animals, but human's have incisors for a reason; to tear meat off the bone.
If you're an atheist vegan, you are officially the dumbest person ever, and you've got your own brand of hypocrisy to measure up to.
I love hamburgers. Now let me eat them in peace.
