well when I walk around in Holland, I find that most people copy styles. and as Goth (emo)
is now fashionable, I tend to wear (as I always did) plain black combat pants, not dyeing my hair nor puting up make-up , never did those, so here people don't call it goth for I do not fit standards. I just feel good, in plain black/ dark blue. occasionaly topped with the only red sweater I have, when i'm realy tired of people calling me colorless, for I am also naturaly pale. The effect though is nice, for the sweater signals them I won't confirm to fashion.

I used to cut all tags off my clothes too, as big fashion designs/labels (not that I bought those) annoyed me, in particular their power of influence over kids in my school. That reason combined with my unconformity. I stopped my label cutting extremity when I realised that by trying to unconform myself, I was just conforming in a different way. However I still wouldn't buy anything designed by any huge fashion label, unless I have hugely fallen in love with it (just saw a skirt 5mins ago off the fairygothmother link I followed from a thread here)

I'll never understand why some people feel they can't appear in public unless every clothing item they own is plastered with the required "popular" labels. I've actually seen jeans that cost more then what I've paid for a used car...jeans!! All because of what name is stitched on the butt(arse).

Each to his own, honey.

What about t-shirts with this week's 'cool' band splashed all over them - do they count?

(I'm not sure if you were responding to me) but yes, speaking of "Bands of the week":remember the Spice Girls? They were supposed to be the next Beatles. Or more recently, the Backstreet Boys or (ugh) N*SYNC.

It was a general comment.

But yes - [shudder] I remember all the above. Who'd wear one of their shirts now? I don't think even irony could excuse that!

From what I've observed,it's "cool" to wear band shirts and other merchandise that's retro, such as the Rolling Stones(I guess they really sold out). It's gotten to the point where you see this stuff turning up at every Mall and K-Mart.

My friend that graduated last year used to wear a Spice Girls shirt as a joke.... her favorite band is Rancid

The "Clueless" movie is a close second.

Speaking of "Clueless," my mom's friend was replacing her collection of videos with DVDs. She gave us a box of about 30 old classics that her late husband had loved: Audrey Hepburns, Katharine (sp?) Hepburns, Monroes, Hitchcocks, A Shot in the Dark, a few other ones. Stuck in there, with all these great movies, was Legally Blonde and Clueless.

*shakes head*

...Does anyone know any way to convince a severely anti-goth mother that being Goth isn't a bad thing?

I wish. My friend's mom HATES me for it. because of it she say that I "exude an air" of haughtiness. But apparently she imagines tones in everyone's voice and is completely holier-than-thou.

My best friends parents dislike "goth" because, as everyone knows, we are all hard-core wrist-slitting bondage-loving satanists. My friends family are Christians. They tolerate me, but give me odd looks quite a lot...
This is quite unfair as i don't dress particularly unusually. I tend to wear dark clothes but nothing "extreme".

The same family often criticise me for not being a "real goth"...
Some people can be severely irritating.

I actually enjoyed Clueless. To me it was just a modern version of "Emma" that severely made fun of the American elite.

And Corpus Draconis, my advice to you about the severely anti-goth mother would be just to let her know what goth is actually about. Perhaps show her some of those websites out there that "dispel the myths" of gothness. Here's one: http://blood-dance.net/goth/grant.html

Ah, the fashion of band shirts. It's funny how bands are becoming brands nowadays. Upon seeing that the sales clerk I was buying from at a shop once was wearing a Misfits t-shirt, I said "Hey! You like the Misfits, that's awesome. One of my favourite bands". The reply: "Misfits is a band...?". Beautiful moment, I must say.

He yeah... I got a cool fake retro Led Zeppelin T-shirt in H&M a while ago. It's black with the 1977 "winged Icarus" graphic on it. I love the Zep and I was pleased to find a cool looking T-shirt that wasn't overpriced band merchandise.

My style has changed a good bit since. I tend to stick with dressy clothing now, black with touches of red, white, and purple. I rarely wear trousers (pants) and when I do they are formal - plain black or pinstripe. When I wear short skirts I wear fish nets or lace pattern tights with over-the-knee socks. Mostly I wear ankle length gypsy-style skirts.
On top I wear black long sleeve tops, blouses and sometimes plain black t-shirts. I have some sweet corsets too. I have a few Japanese-esque tops - cross-over kimono style things and bell- or wide-sleeved tops.

I usually wear boots. I have 5 pairs. One pair of black knee high PVC look zip-up boots, one pair of black patent leather shin-covering boots, one pair of leather knee-high lace-up boots, and a pair of high-healed lace-up Victorian style boots. And last week I caved to something akin temptation and bought my first pair of New Rocks. (I also have a pair of Doc Martins but never really wear them).
I have one pair of cheap black and grey runners (trainers) that are paper-light and useless in the lightest of rain. I wear them to give my feet a break from boots.

Right now I'm wearing, toe to top, my New Rocks, lace pattern tights (panty-hose), a black crinkle-effect skirt with an uneven hemline, a black camisole under a black, off-the shoulder crochet top with laced-up sleeves, and over that I have a short little black zip-up top with a faux-fur neckline.

I'd really like to start making my own clothes. I often have ideas for designs, which I sketch, but I have serious doubts about my ability to bring them to life .

Boots, boots, boots!! *is overcome with boot-lust*

I can't wait to buy the buckled pair I've been drooling over for ages when I get my first month's wages from my new job!

My style of clothing usually either victorian mourning ware (when I can get hold of some), or 40's war bride. I've been know for going into moshpits dressed in a vintage 20's flapper dress, satin arm-length gloves, a grey beret and mime makeup. I adore hats, boots, stockings and corsets. I despise the kind of clothing that you get from so called goth shops, that are already "personalised" with safety pins, zips, studs etc... I don't mind if you've put them on yourself, I do it all the time, but it pisses me off when I walk down the street and see clones of anti-clones and it all just get rather convoluted and confusing when I try to explain to them that they aren't individual if they're wearing the same outfit as a girl across the street.

The one thing my mom was good for was teaching me how to sew. I make my own corsets and I've got a lot of vintage clothing that I have to repair before they look vaguely wearable.
I suggest that you start by repairing or imitating clothes that you like using a basic pattern, and then build up to creating your own designs. You won't be able to make up your designs immediately, and even if it takes ages, the end product is worth it.

The imitation/modifying strategy is one thing I've been doing.
An other fun thing to do is get random cloth and pin together skirts or something. I did that one morning cuz I didn't want to wear pants, and it worked out very, very well. And then you don't have a fixed thing; you can easily change it whenever you want.

I desperately want a sewing machine. Making my own clothes would be so much easier that way. They can be expensive though... I need a simple, second-hand one. Or I'll convince my mom to get a new one and give me her old... *sighs and dreams of sewing machines...*

Corpus.. do they have Walmarts up nort dare? Most Walmarts have a decent selection of sewing machines at a respectable price.. I'd suggest one with a baby lock and regular sewing function. It'll save you the trouble of torn stitching and ripped seams. (granted you can do something similar with a regular machine, but this will make it less difficult.. )

I want to learn how to make corsets... real corsets.

If i can say anything about my style i would have to say it's victorian, Louis (yes from interview with the vampire) like. I adore that style. if i could get my hands on a decent white wig i would definetly wear it.

Louis-when-he-was-in-Paris, I assume, since you say "Victorian"? He did look very classy. However, I'm more partial to the style he had when he was first turned into a vampire. I want one of those coats SOOOOOO much. Either out of thick velvet or soft felt. That's an other thing I want to learn to make. *gazes whistfully and sighs*

We do have Walmarts, Sanctus, but I'd rather not shop there if I can avoid it... I recently watched an anti-Walmart video, and it's still a little fresh in my mind.

I don't need real corsets. I'm a twig already. Though, they would be cool to learn to make...
