Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Most of those were already mentioned.
This thread was already a hidden "What should I listen to in order to be gawth," but now its devolving into a validation of gothness whereby one mentions the proper albums and gains credibility somehow.
So silly.

Anyways, I'm going to say:
Gloria Mundi - I, Individual
simply because it's true and totally false at the same time. ;-)

Good goth I love you Deli. You saint. Hah. While this is a very old thread, I ironically stumbled upon before its' ressurection, I am still gonna, for the goth points and record :}, write my own list of influential goth albums.
Top most influential goth albums
-Bauhaus-In the flat field, 4AD 1980
-Christian Death-Only Theatre of Pain, Virgin Records 1982
-Siouxsie and the Banshees-JuJu, Polydor 1981
-SexGang Children-Song and Legend, Noise 1983
-Virgin Prunes-...If I die, I die, Virgin Records 1982
-the Cure-Pornography, Fiction 1982
-Theatre of Hate-Westworld, ???
-Joy Division-Closer, ???
-Southern Death Cult-Southern Death Cult, 4AD 1981
-Sisters of Mercy-Floodland, Beggars Banquet 1987
-Specimen-Azoic, 1983
-Kommunity FK-Close One Sad Eye, ???
-Alien Sex Fiend-Who's been sleeping in my Brain? 1983 ???
-Dead Can Dance-Dead Can Dance4AD 1981
Proto goth albums
-David Bowie-Diamond Dogs 1974
-The Velvet Underground-[i]The Velvet Underground and Nico[i] 1969
-T. Rex-Electric Warrior
-Iggy Pop-The Idiot
-Roxy Music-Dream Home Heartache
-The Doors-Strange Days 1972
and, arguably, Black Sbbth's debut LP. That, while being ''metill'', showed with some lyrics and imagery, an ideal of our culture.

What I don't quite understand is why people like to write or say "Gothic/metal".
Out of every goth group I've ever heard, NONE of them has ever sounded anything like metal. 0_o

This group is neat and makes some intriguing music, but they a.) didn't influence many bands in the genres listed in this thread's topic, and b.) didn't influence anyone of note in the folk genre.

I would say that Depeche Mode's Violator, or Black Celebration was influential simply because it helped to pave the way for darkwave, particularly The Cruxshadows. The Doors are definitely seconded as an influence; in my list would also be David Bowie's "Diamond Dogs", "Low", and "Ziggy Stardust". Noted as well would be any music done by Siouxsie when she was working with Sid Vicious. "Unknown Pleasures" by Joy Division would make my list; I second Iggy Pop's "The Idiot". I would name MC5's "High Time" as an influence(strangely enough); Adam Ant's "Dirk Wears White Socks", The Misfits' "The Misfits", Alice Coopers' "School's Out" (1. Because 45 Grave covered it; 2. Because of the general influence he had on deathrock when it was developing.), and The Beatles' "Magical Mystery Tour" ("I Am the Walrus" was an influencing track, as was "Paint it Black" by The Rolling Stones, but only as a track). I continue on with the same group by naming "The White Album" as an influence (Siouxsie and the Banshees covered "Dear Prudence, and "The Moon Looked Down and Laughed" by the Virgin Prunes. Last but not least would be "The Iron Mask" by Christian Death.

Southern Death Cult - Self titled
Christan Death - Only Theatre of Pain
Specimen - Wet Warm Cling Film-Red Velvet Crush
Bauhaus - In the Flat Field
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Juju
Rudimentary Peni - Death Church (influential to deathrock anyway)
Those are a few of my picks

I was gonna add something, but then I saw Sobeh's list. That about sums it up. But, I ask, Would Nick Cave be included in here anywhere? Nevermind, I guess I'll answer my own question. While I think the Bad Seeds kicked a lot of ass, I guess they weren't very influential. Anyways, I second your post, Sobeh.
...and someone tried to include Smashing Pumpkins in the list? What, did you see the video for "Tonight, Tonight" and think, "Hey, dey are goffy n stuff!"
Bah!

These may get slaged because they are not strictly in the genre, but they were highly influential.
WIRE - 154 (1979)
TELEVISON - Marquee Moon (1977)
PERE UBU - The Modern Dance (1978)
Bands like THE SISTERS OF MERCY, VIRGIN PRUNES, & JOY DIVISION site them as influences.

If I had awards to hand out, you and Vyv would be getting some.
I'd like to add to the list of goth-influencing albums:
Magazine - Still Life (1978)
Public Image Limited - Public Image (1978)
Two more albums of colossal worth, that are largely overlooked in modern music history.

I'm sure you meant "Real Life" by MAGAZINE. "The Light Pours Out of Me" is one of my all-time favorites. "Scondhand Daylight" doesn't have as many high points but "Rythm of Cruelty" is one of their best.
Are you familar with the band THE REDS from Philadelphia (there are a few bands that have taken that name). Thier first self-titled album is a must.
I've never seen it on CD, but it was actually on A&M Records so it's not that hard to find. Came out 1977 or 1976 and is way ahead of it's time.

Yeah, opps. I should probably know that title off the top of my head better since I play songs off of it at least once a month at the club. ;-) Yeah, I found Secondhand Daylight to be a little lackluster by comparison. Still not a bad album though. Actually, "Permafrost" is the first song I heard by them. It's really a shame they're totally ignored right now. I do like Gang of Four and Devo as much as the next guy, but bands like Magazine and Wire really deserve their due as well.
"The Light Pours Out of Me" is an absolute classic. If you can find a copy of Holy Cow's cover of that song (it'd have to be a live version), they do it good justice. I *believe* there is a bootleg of their performance at Drop Dead 2 floating around there somewhere, and if I remember right, they did play it live then.
Is this what the album by The Reds looks like? -
http://www.audiophileusa.com/covers400/51363.jpg
If it is, I'm going to buy it very soon. ;-)
Well, on to other albums -
UK Decay - Black Cat EP (1980)
Suicide - Suicide (1977)

Yes that's the REDS album cover. They went on to do several more albums after that, each one worse than the previous. At the end they ended up with Mike Thorne (WIRE producer and keyboard player on 154) producing them and playing in the band. The resulting albums were dissapointing and bland.

I would only add to Vyvyan's listing of Dead Can Dance albums Wake. It more than any other has influenced my outlook on life.
