I took ballet when I was 6. Other than that...Never taken formal lessons, but was given a few informal belly dancing lessons by my art instructor of the time. Also was taught to waltz by my ex's sister.

I don't dance much in front of other people, and I'm not old enough to get into a club, so I don't worry about it toooo terribly much. But here's what I do when I do dance:

I do a basic form of bellydancing, combined with my own head/arm/shoulder movements and general swaying. I typically stay somewhat still since I almost always am wearing heels of at least 2+ inches. When I move, I just try to make sure whatever I'm doing looks smooth and fits the music.

I practice in front of a mirror. That way I know what it looks like. Which, sometimes, is a bad thing.

are there actually 6 year olds out there that bully their parents into letting them take dancing lessons? Like a sort of Coup-de-dance?
i mean why would a 6 year old want to be subjected to contortion and agony?

any ideas?

I did try to bully my mother into paying ballet lessons for me from age 5- 16, then I gave up, realising there just wasn't any money to do it :P *still wants to dance* I remember copying my step sis when she showed me some steps. If I hadn't been spending my money on vocal lessons, I'd definitely have taken ballet classes.

I remember being taken to various Tap, Modern, Irish and Ballet dancing. None of them did well. I didn't mind the ballet, since I knew that flexibility and balance are useful traits- at age 4-7, you understand these things in terms of ability to reach the biscuit tin. But instructors? Bad people.
So I have thrown all half-remembered training aside and gone for the goth two-step and the slamdance. The two-step can be modified to work with even Cruxshadows songs like Marilyn. Even the livelier bits.

Not twostep like in ballroom dance, I'm guessing, rather the common 1-2- lift your foot and go back 1- 2 kind of twostep :P

Yeah, that kind. Couple of steps forward, couple back (or side to side) in approximation to the music. Maybe move the arms a bit in floor sweeping gestures.
Slamdancing is fun, but I always feel as if I should have glowsticks to give some purpose to the arm movements.

I didn't want to start a new thread for this, so I'll pop this thread back up and ask:

What is the "etiquette" if any, for a dance pit? Specifically, there is a club I frequent, where the pit begins as a mosh pit, but some radicals always end up taking over (usually just a half dozen guys) and start hardcore dancing, then all the chicks leave and it becomes a bloody free for all. I mean, I like seeng bleeding lips, ears and noses as much as the next guy, but having a few violent guys taking over from what was boy/girl moshing fun seems a little unfair.

Ha. The first show I ever went to I walked out with a black eye and a broke toe. =P BUT I did bust some guy's lip. =] I was pretty proud of myself. lol.

Very good idea - the hiding part- cuz that's what I do. I've done a lot of latin ballroom, y'know, salsa, tango stuff so I've learned ignore the accusations of using to much "hip' + if the damn underclassman next to ya decides to "parody" your dancing, glare at them and keep at it. Practice breeds experiance, and experiance usually makes people better at stuff

Yeah, there is definitely some hate venting going on: a couple of weeks ago, when the pit became hardcore, there was one big guy who was intentionally roundhouse kicking people, and kicking smaller guys in the head. Another big guy went in and starting pushing the kicker in the back and he backed off. It's just that it is really cool when it is co-ed, because there are some really good industrial dance chicks, but they leave when the violence starts.

In the dancing aspect, it's 20s swing-style dancing with a goth twist. It aint much, but it won me and my girlfriend a trophy in high school. Hahaha.

I absolutely hate dancing. Every form of it. I refuse to dance, no matter what the occasion. I also dislike seeing other people dance.
