Oye. I could write a novel on this subject but i'll just say this.... As for the general question brought up in this thread, I think a lot of it has much more to do with tradition than racism. A lot of people would argue otherwise, but I firmly believe this.
Although there have been different people coexisting in the same area throughout history...I mean, It's nothing new...There never has been such diversity in one area as there is here in America and even other places abroad in the twenty-first century.
But...There are so many cultural superstitions, traditions and even family superstitions and traditions that our parents have been brought up with that it's going to take them a long time to overcome.
I can't remember.
I was either watching a movie or reading something the other day where this woman was talking about how she wanted her redheaded daughter to marry a redheaded man so they could have little redheaded children. The daughter married a dark haired man, still white, but the mother resented the man from that moment on and every time she would see him, she would have this smug attitude.
I was thinking about racism and prejudice then.
I mean, even within a continent like Europe, there are still traditions and superstitions about how people choose a mate. The same way with Asia. Oviously, there are a lot of superstitions about marrying someone outside of your provice(north/south, Japan/China/Korea, etc) or country, etc. Same with Africa. There are stereotypes about marrying outside of your tribe, etc. The same with all of the other continents.
You add all of these family and cultural traditions together and where do races which lie outside of these cultures stand?
It's going to take our mothers, fathers, and grandparents a little longer to accept diversity than it's going to take most of us.
I think there is a little aura of smug superiority in your mother...But I think a lot of it has to do with having to get use to someone who is different, like others have said here. It's not easy. But if she wants to change, she will.
I don't think there needs to be a change within herself, if she doesn't want certain people for friends or more. That's a personal choice.
But, she obviously needs to stop saying certain things around you, your brother, and the people you bring over.
Don't really have a solution for that.

And if you said you hated people with glasses because they do better, it wouldn't be racist, but it would still be stupid to hate them for it, because it's still your weakness.

As for pointing out a characteristic of a group that overshadows you...that in itself is hinting on racism, because you're implying the group as a whole is better. That's generalizing that all Asians do well in school. Not true.

If it makes you feel better, I don't think that there is anyone in the world who isn't just a little bit judgmental. Just a little. Whether it's hating Jews (I still hate Hitler for htis, even though he's dead) or inching away from skinny people thinking that they're anorexic.
