Basically, everyone conforms in some way or another, even if they don't realize it. If you want to go really deep into it, things like owning a car or having a job could be considered conformist. Or shopping - for anything. (Okay really that's more consumerist - but the lines are pretty blurry there).

I do have a different point of view over this whole "are labels positive or not" thing. I don't like being labeled because I think that a label is too simple to express everything I am. But, I don't mind about using those words as adjetives for myself.
I don't know if I'm expressing myself well... For example, I find it truly ridiculous and even posey when somebody introduces him/herself as: "Hi, my names XXX, and I'm a Goth"; or when somebody is constantly talking about how goth they are, or how goth they look, or how goth is their favourite band, and seem to think about nothing but Goth. But if I had to try and explain the way I am to somebody, "gothic" will be one of the words I would use... amongst many others like "creative", "pig-headed", "brown-haired" (or "extremely beautiful" LOL).
And if somebody asks me if I'm goth, I would reply "I am", just as I would reply if I'm asked if I'm a girl, or if I'm Spanish, or wathever.
Maybe I haven't made my point clear, but the difference for me is that when you use an adjetive you are admiting the word as a part of your inner self (and therefore is more consequent with "goth" as a word in particular), more like a crystal from which you look at the world; but if you use it as a label it is like a foreing thing to you that has been imposed and forced into your personality.
Maybe I'm wrong, but, as Nietszche said, "Labelling means the death of the thing being labeled" (or something like that ^^U)

There's almost always a 'goth' clique in every high school, but it's hardly gothic at all.
Teenagers conform themselves to a herd mentality during the teen years to ease the transition from puberty to adulthood.
It is Erikson's fifth stage - Identity vs. confusion.
The common 'gothic' clique in a school (and most other cliques) grows as if they had just one mind, because each individual can't find its own identity yet; and they sure as hell won't find it when the friends they allow into their world all act the same.
A lack of self-identity and individual personality defeats the whole purpose of being a goth, wouldn't you all agree?

Granted, though now it just seems like Masonites and Scene Kids. I wouldn't count that. I'm just too blunt and goth to do so  ... However, I will credit them for showing the ideal of goth with the attire and innovation. Like Ed mentioned, though he now realises they were loads of poseurs, he still was fascinated and felt like he belonged at Hot Topic.

No, where I live, apparently, 'emo' and 'Goth' are interchangable. 'Goth kids' are always pathetic low-lives who sit around listening to ghost noises,My Chemical Romance, and Hawthorne Heights (Yes, you read correctly. This is the "stereotype" in my school.). Let's not forget the second part-none of them are capable of making friends; they sit around bitching about life, cutting themselves all day, and writing crappy poetry about how much life sucks. I know it belongs more in the "Goths in School" forum; however, it's still representative of the general stereotype in my surroundings.

One of the most baffling, at least to me, stereotypes of goth is that we must dress this way because we're depressed. Obviously such a statement comes from people who have absolutely no clue about clinical depression. Dressing goth, even if you're only doing a "goth lite" look takes a bit of effort, far more effort than you really have the energy or motivation for when you're depressed. I actually find that the times when I am doing better with my mental health are the times I will dress and look more Goth because I have more energy and motivation and pride in my appearance.

I think he meant that jock in itself has no identity, while jocks very well may have... That jock is an adjective, not a subculture.
