I think it will be interesting to see Johnny Depp singing. Tim Burton does some excellent movies. I've never seen one I didn't like. Hey, The Corpse Bride was a great one by him, too!! My son loves it

Well, I saw it a few hours ago. It wasn't bad, but I didn't think it was all it was cracked up to be. In my opinion, it seems as if it was quite unrefined, even more so that the subject matter and the characters themselves would allow for. All in all, I'm glad I didn't have to pay for it.
Sweeny Todd is the only movie I've ever seen anyone walk out on. Though then again, I've only seen two other movies that were so full.

How many people walked out on Sweeney Todd? At what point during the film did they walk out? Where do you live?

It was a group of about dozen, about 45 minutes in.
What does where I live have anything to do with it?

I've seen both I am Legend and Sweeney Todd, Sweeney Todd is much better.

Bit of a late response. I've already seen Sweeney Todd and National Treasure. I thought NT was better.

I am a huge fan of the musical (Sondheim is a genius...) and I just came back from seeing the film.
I'd say Tim Burton remained pretty faithful to the original piece, and even that Johnny Depp was able to hold his own in terms of singing. As a fan of the musical, I was probably the most skeptical person going in to see it, prepared for Hollywood to ruin Broadway, as they so frequently do, but I was pleasantly surprised.
Helena Bonham Carter was a bit weak as Mrs. Lovett in terms of voice, but she looked absolutely stunning. I loved her corsets...mm.
And Johnny Depp, as is generally the case...splendid.

Thank you for the input. I am interested in this movie and am not a huge fan of musicals over-all. One that I really liked was Jesus Christ Superstar.

Meant to see it on opening day.
Finally saw it this past Saturday night.
Holy crap, it was wickedly awesome!!
I'm not a musicals kind of guy either (ironic, being a musician) but all the songs were catchy & didn't get in the way of the overall story. Still, I've got to confess that I did rather prefer the "A" story of Sweeney working on getting his revenge to the "B" story of his sailor friend trying to hook up with that girl. Hell, even the "C" story of Mrs. Lovett's crush on Sweeney had my interest even more than the "B" story.
Recommended it to a gothy girl friend of mind but she's a bit on the squeamish side when it comes to bloodwork, so my voice trailed off as I was recommending it b/c I suddenly remembered that fact.

Paigey, the one member on these boards who I've never seen post something that WASNT idiotic, you do know before becoming an actor Johnny Depp was a singer in a rock band right?

It's not an entirely stupid statement. As I said in the other thread about this movie, Sweeney Todd is an extremely challenging musical. That Johnny Depp sung in a failed rock band doesn't really inspire faith in his ability to tackle the lead role. Apparently he did a decent job though, so more power to him.

This director has been retreading the same thematic territory since Edward Scissorhands, straying from it even slightly only in Planet of the Apes (horrible), Big Fish (refreshing), and debatably, Mars Attacks (eehhh..). You can't deny that, especially not by making an analogue to Shakespeare which makes no sense provided that Shakespeare's plays were written for the stage centuries ago, and not only do we have no idea how they looked when initially performed, but since their conception they've been directed by millions of different people and have therefore taken on myriad different 'ambiences' to use the term you chose.
With the exception of his animated stuff and, in part, Scissorhands, Burton is a DIRECTOR, not a WRITER. He picks, or is given, certain scripts and chooses how to film them, and he always chooses to film them in the same way.

I like Burton, regardless. The problem is, Burton and Depp are such good friends, I don't think he pushed Depp as hard as he should have in this movie. Depp was good, don't get me wrong, but I think he could have been better.
Carter stole the show, as far as I'm concerned. She caught my eye in every scene she was in, and her costumes were done well. The designer knew what they were doing, and put her in clothes that had good color and were shaped to her frame. She has a very soft, whispy voice, so her singing could have been better, but I liked her.
As for the very fake blood, done on purpose, I still covered my eyes. I'm too squeamish, even for that. Especially when he shoved her in the oven. It was just messed up.

I saw sweeny Todd. I thought the visual was good. But I felt like some of the writing could of been better. Like the scene where Sweeny Gets his knifes back, at the end of the song he's like "And now my arm is complete again" ANd I'm sitting there like WTF!!! Sweeny Todd a 6 on a scale of 1-10.. I hated the way it ended. They dont tell you what happens with the daughter. I was just so annoyed with the scene about the "worst pie in london" its like " my pies taste like shit YAY!!".
I think I am legend was better as a whole, People clapped at the end of it. But the best movie out right now is "The Great Debaters"
If your gonna go see a movie see that its well worth the money.

My only problem with Sweeny Todd was the Harry Potter overtones from casting the very excellent Alan Rickman and the very sinister Timothy Spall as antagonists. Case in point: the moment Rickman said "Mr. Todd" in a very Snape like manner.

Can you really ridicule him for his voice? Or is it that you're just pointing out that you saw nothing really significantly wrong with the film?

I loved the movie.
And Bleed Rebel [l] ion, you're criticizing the writing when you can't even spell your username?

Both. The other people in the theater burst out into laughter when he said that line, but otherwise I really liked the film. Since I had not seen the original stage play, I think Burton pulled off a great stage-to-screen adaptation on par with Grease and Hairspray.

That's like saying that the movie had some Pirates of the Carribbean overtones because Johnny Depp used a very Jack Sparrow-like voice a number of times. And there was a sailing ship at the beginning.

These were my thoughts exactly. But I had my faith in Burton. I agree with you though with Carter protraying Lovett. I was really skeptical about her playing Lovett, but I do think that she a great job, even though her voice was a little bit weak in it. I did enjoy hearing Depp sign though.

I saw Sweeney Todd again! Loved it. Agree with Above comments about Helena. Stunning as always, but not the strongest singer. I too wish to see Juno, might drag boyfriend (evil chuckle ;D)
