What is evil, anyway?
Evil.
Is Evil simply the amount of scars left over from your past?
Is it the color of your soul? The depth of your compassion?
Is Evil just a way of life? Or a way of acting?
Is it a punishment? A gift?
What is evil, anyway?

"Evil" does exist, in a fantastical sense.

There is evil. What was Hitler if evil didn't exsist?
Was he just insane?

Selfishness. Evil is selfishness, pure and simple, when you just boil it down.
I mean, a lot of us see manifestations of evil when people hurt others for "no reason", but there's always a reason, and if you can't find it, then that's a reason in itself- just for selfish amusement.
And on the subject of Hitler, he was obviously selfish- his interests were for the blonde-haired and the blue-eyed, and his selfishness comes from the fact that he was so obsessed he thought he was the blonde-haired, blue-eyed God's gift to the Aryan race.
It is a way of life, for some people. Somebody who is so selfish that it has manifestations in other peoples' lives... that's not just a part of the "evil" person, that is them. It's who they are, an inescapable fact.
People are always wondering about the big "If there was no evil, then would there be good?", and I've always sort of thought "No, because 'good' doesn't even really exist, now. It's just a word we use to say 'not evil' in a world of abundant evil."
Evil... is selfishness.

Hitler did what he thought was good.
Hitler was also a vegetarian.
Hitler also did a bunch of wonderful things for the German people that most people discount because.... he was Hitler.
Hitler was a paranoid schizophrenic.
Yes, he was crazy.
Evil doesn't exist; it is a subjective term to be applied to absolutes.
There's no such thing as pure selfishness, and no such thing as pure selflessness. The Catholic church in Austria preached anti-semitism; Hitler was a bi-product of that. Are you going to suggest that the Catholic church is evil?

....and why does everyone bring up Hitler when evil comes up?
Why can't anyone bring up Stalin or Cortez?

Well, maybe, I mean, it all depends on the person. I am an athiest. I've been told i'm going to hell by many catholics, i was ***** by a bunch of chrustian people because i am an athiest. I mean, no, they were not evil, just stupid. But many other people in my place, might consider Christians evil. After all, in the bible, is says that women are not of the holy state.

I think there is no correlation between the two.
In terms of "evil", Hilter is irrelevant.

Yes.
No, the Catholic Church does do good things, I guess. I can't think of any right now. But, I know that it would be simply impossible for that many people to be pure evil.
Disfunction, I agree with you. One cannot descibe anything in absolutes, but I believe that evil does exsist in the world. Maybe not in absolutes but, it does exsist.
One simple fact proves it for me: without evil there is no good. I have to believe in good. Without good, what is the point of living?

But even with good, is there still a point of living? I mean, for one w/o the faith in a god.

One does not need to have faith in a god to feel the need to live a good life.
It feels good to do good things.
The emotions like guilt and fear feel bad and are a result of doing bad things.
However, one cannot deny there is a god. If you are true to your feelings, you feel god. I didn't believe in god(I was lying to myself) for a long time. Then, I found out ice floats and I no longer could deny that there was a god.
Although, I am not a christian. I believe everyone has their "own" god.
I'm ranting again.... sorry.

Sure it is.
Without ying there is no yang.
Without woman there is no man.
It's a very simple concept.

All the elements on the planet, that we know of, sink in their solid forms, except water.
If ice sank life couldn't exsist.

Evil is nestled firmly against the breast of subjectivity, where it supples ceaselessly.
Get out of that mindset.

Ice floats because of water's hydrogen bonds. These bonds are the reason that we are made up of mostly water (they help chemical reactions to occur, cause materials to dissolve more easily, etc.). We have evolved due to the prevalence of water, and if anything so common suddenly changed its properties, we would die. It's not just luck; it's natural selection that we are able to live in this environment.

It is the God thing I do not grasp. IF there was a god, would i still have gotten *****? I have not done anything to deserve that, atleast not that I know of.... And would there be so much suffering? I've seen alot. And it is Those experiences that have contributed to my Athiest point of view.

I'm not going to try to argue the point whether or not there is a god to you joyslayer because your beleifs are yours and you need something to hold on to.
And why do you think god would enjoy punishing you or anyone at all.
Its called free will we have a conscious and so we decide what we do with our lives from the time we wake up till the time we go to sleep we make the CHOICES
So no I dont think evil exists Its just the bad choices people make

not really evil - but definately painful - and to some the pain can be joyous... so there really is no answer
only perspective - how utterly human and pointless is that?

That is why I respect you Dis. You have the same argument as I on this matter. And I'd also much sooner bring up a few Russian Czars who slaughtered their own people before I brought up Hitler.

I know what you mean Demonista, and I'm under the same impression.
Evil is just a word, the same as time. Neither really exist, they are just use as a state of measurement and description.

Yes...Kinda like
Rate on the EVIL METER!
What's eviler?
Rubbing your crotch with a peanut butter sandwich to pleasure yourself?
Or watching home made pronography made by your grandparents?
Like Korova said...It's a state of measurement.

The concept of evil has as many palpable properties as the concept of morality: None. They do not actually exist. Just as morality is judged by the individual or the society, so is the measurement of evil. I believe that we can do without the concept of evil, but morality is too built into our ways of thinking to be gotten rid of.

Ooh, I actually like the way Scythan worded it. We had the same discussion of morality barriers in different societies in one of my classes a while back.
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go rub a peanut butter sandwich in my crotch.
...mmm *drool*
