Trenchcoats
I'm considering getting a trenchcoat (one of those heavy cotton ones with industrial details, I'm not too fond of leather clothes).
Anyone else got one? I'd like to hear the pro's and con's of everyday use before diving into the purchase, considering how after buying those goggles I won't have an awful lot of cash left to make mistakes with. :o

I have a cotton one. It's really quite nice. It has a silk lining in it. I got it for $50 at KMart last year. It keeps you nice and warm, but is also light enough for the warmish weather. I like mine a lot. It's my favorite article of clothing probably. It's worth the money. Trust me.

$50 is about £26... the ones on offer to me are £70/£80, or $130/$150. Would you still have bought it at that price? I also need to make sure I don't look like a twat wearing one before I buy it so I'll need to drag a friend along with me. XD
I so wish we had KMart's here, lmao. I'm gonna buy this from Hellfire in Glasgow, a place so expensive that I'll bet their idea of a sale would be to jack the prices up... but my only cheaper option is secondhand or a 3/4 length black cotton one with "red skull" tape along the hems, which looks absolutely ugly.

You could check eBay. I forgot you might not have Kmarts and such there. I would have paid a lot of money for mine. I probably would have paid that much for mine. It's really nice. Of course mine was for sale, and it's a designer label. OOOOO doesn't that make me cool??? *Laughs* Yes make sure you have a friend there. It might be helpful.

In my oppinion. Trenchcoats are the epitimy of unoriginality. I've only ever been to a club once, but every single guy there looked like a clone; mid-lenght hair, some type of t-shirt, jeans, and, you guessed it, a big black trenchcoat. I just think that they're very cheesey. I prefer leather or velvet jackets. Again, though, this is just my oppinion. Don't let it hold you back from getting what you really want. In rare circumstances trenchcoats can look somewhat cool.

Is the thing Louis in Interview With the Vampire wears a coat or a trenchcoat?
Because I like those ones. It'd look awesome with a top hat and maybe goggles.

No one is my town except for one other kid wear a trenchcoat. It's just that kid and I that wear them. Everyone here wears bright colored jackets or those big puffy ones that make you look "gangster" or like an Eskimo.

Pretty different here in Scotland... Several days I've ended up walking about for ages in the busiest part of the largest city here (Glasgow), I've only passed about two or three people wearing a trenchcoat. If they were really common here I'd definitely have passed them by without wanting one though. :o
Most of the people here are either chavs or "trendies" (tight jeans, fashion tops, blonde highlights, popped collars, boyband hair, jeans with knee-height crotch.....)

Hmmm... trenchcoats. Lightweight military issue trenchcoats not only have an awesome cut, but are functional as well.
A good designer trenchcoat made of lightweight fabric, though expensive, looks smart due to the overall flowy-ness of it. You know, really dramatic on a windy day...
Tips for buying? Um... hmm...
Make sure it is put together OK (buttons are on soundly, seams won't unravel after a week, etc...), and still looks good on you OVER a fairly bulky outfit (unless it's not being purchased for function and you just want a certain "look" when you wear it), and if you like it enough to wear it more than once, splurge just that one time and you won't regret it!

Lots of people around here have trenchcoats. I, myself, go for the traditional goth look with tight black jeans, maybe some type of thin sleeveless shirt, my nice fitting velvet jacket and a host of others. I'm not a fan of the neo crap.

Friends don't let friends look like the Crow. You'd pretty much be reenforcing the biggest and lamest goth steriotype ever, but hey, do what you want. Prepair to be made fun of by all, especially goths.

The Crow looks cool... but so does Marilyn Manson, the avatar of no individuality.

I've always thought leather/vinyl trousers look really tacky, but if you like them then go for it.
My trenchcoat's definitely not Neo, unless they make a 4th in the trilogy (lol) where he's into chains and bondage stuff.

Just if anyone's curious, what's my oppinion about Marilyn Manson?
I like his music, and I actually think he was a genius. He sacrificed his own self-identity to become the anti-thesis of standard society's values.
I woud never do this. I love myself too much to lose me in the constantly moving waters of fashion, trying to always flow the exact opposite way.
But the idea itself is geniale.
The problem is that people now want to BE him, which destroys the whole idea of his lack of self-identity and makes it lose its meaning.
Whether this was Manson's original idea or not, I don't see him follow this ideal lately; his shows are now more pointlessly obscene than taboo, and his lasts songs lack originality.
By some reason, to me, Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids lost their touch after Twiggy Ramirez left.

I love his music, and I love his style of dress because of its shock value and uniqueness. Yes, uniqueness... I haven't seen anyone looking remotely like him in real life. But I believe it's more up to his managers and PR people than him himself when it comes to how he does his shows, tours and album lyrics, which is why they're a bit lacklustre now.

Yeah,... trenchcoats really don't go with the "goth look", I guess--they seem more "military" or "anarchist" or whatever. (The non-goth "wearers of black" at my old schools almost always called themselves something along these lines...)
The cape-style overcoat-thing like uh... this: http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/345/m4550sd2.jpg
comes to mind more if you mention "goth" and "trenchcoat".

Well if I was gonna have to put myself into a category of goth I'd definitely be under the cyber/industrial header as opposed to the classic style. I love gothic music, philosophy, history, literature, architecture, etc... but I'd be miserable without the other half of my personality. But even still, all meat and no potatoes and I'll forget what potatoes taste like. >_>
Plus I'm not a guy so I couldn't really get away with travel capes and cravattes even if I wanted to.

Personally i have a mental issue with being away from people and dont even like walking passed people or looking at people...its really weird....i try really hard to not let it consume me..although i might just find my peace at an an abandoned place and make it my home and be away from the world...a gothic orthedox sounds good to me.
WHAT I BASICLY SAID IS F*CK EVERYBODY AND LET EVERYBODY LOOK LIKE WHAT THEY WANT TO LOOK LIKE OR THEY WILL GO CRAZY. i am not going to treat someone i see like trash and call them names and do any physical thing to them becuase they look like somthing i really admire although still will say poser or chuckle. no not going to happend, if they are nice and want to be my friend and are sensear about it, i dont care if they look like the spitting image of eric draven or well i dont know somebody else, friend is friend and snesearity is sensearity.

Trenchcoats seem somewhat pointless to me.
Why?
Well, they're big and clunky, for one. They really provide a inordinate amount of coverage from the rain, when a light jacket and pants will do the same, and they don't provide such an inordinate amount of storage, that it would be prudent to go out and buy one for that purpose.
With that said, trenchcoats are just damn sexy. I mean, from a purely asthetic point of view, I love them. They're comfy, and warm, and do just what I said: Provide an inordinate amount of coverage from the weather. And while you can't store that extra much, you can store a helluva lot in them. Plus, that detective look with the hat, is just sexier then sexy.
Now, as to whether they're goth or not.
Who cares? If it feels sexy, looks sexy, and acts sexy, then it's sexy, and that's just great for everyone. And if they fit the "Goth" look, more power to ya. If they don't, well, who is honestly going to go out of their way to point this out? And if they do, I'm willing to be they have more problems then you.
I less than three them, and whenever I get the cash, I'm going to Wally-World to see if they have them. If they don't, I'll have to go to... Egasp. The mall.
I hate the mall.
But anyway...

As a side-effect of being an "Army brat" (gah, I hate that phrase--I was not a brat...), I have an affinity for the military-issued trenchcoats (and I still heart uniforms).
The flowy fashion trenchcoats are pretty, but if made just to be pretty, a bit uncomfortable sometimes, and not functional worth a damn.
I have my mom's old one, partly for sentimental value, and mostly because it comes very much in handy during the schizo fall/winter season combo in Illinois...
