Also, their first album IS the closest they ever were to black metal, but its still on the Symphonic BM side, and has some influences from outside BM.

And best black metal album of all time? Jeez, it polarises opinion even amongst fans, and it is by no means close to being best album of all time

I didn't say that it was the best black metal album. I said it is considered. Clearly, it doesn't compare to Black Metal by Venom, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas by Mayhem, or In the Nightside Eclipse by Emperor.

But when you get down to it, it's pointless debating whether or not they are something.

I wouldn't even say it was considered to be anything close to best bm album, but its all opinion so I'll agree to disagree with you there.

Also, nice choice on DMDS by Mayhem and Nightside Eclipse by Emperor, possibly 2 of my favourite BM albums.
And Venom are good, but not black metal at all to be honest (apart from the influences they had on later bands).

And despite typing all that, I agree with you that its pointless, shoehorning bands into certain genres is only going to create pointless argument.

On a side note, check out Mayhems cover of Venoms Witching hour if you haven't already........its worth it for Messiahs scream at the end.

I'd put Bathory's "Under the Sign of the Black Mark" up there, personally.
But honestly, would you have discovered Mayhem and Emperor if they weren't shoehorned as "black metal"?

Ah yes, Bathory, his first couple of albums where quite excellent.

And I would have discovered Mayhem....they were the first black metal band I heard before I knew what black metal was, Emperor, no.

So you have a fair point, I guess genres help the search for music you may be into

You can put bands in genres. I mean, there are certain sounds that bands adhere to, but it's pointless when it gets to the point that all you're paying attention to is the genre and not the music.

I don't like Cradle of Flith. I hate the way the lead singer sounds. I'm sorry but that's not singing.

Exactly WHY is this thread 6 pages? Seriously, how much can be said about this band? I will summarize: They are the Marilyn Manson of black metal. Fin.

Because it's a topic that many people have a lot to say about.

isn't that kind of obvious?

I think its probably more dure to the fact people either seem to love or hate them, and like to argue about it.

Really, listen/don't listen to cradle of filth all you want, its not like men in black suits will come round and take you away depending what music you like

Edit: Its also 6 pages because its an old thread that people keep bumping to have the same arguments over and over

I like them and hate them.
Some of their songs remind me of dark Medieval stuff
and the late 1800's which i like.

Hah. The only reason I have two Cradle of Filth songs on my iTunes is because I sing like Dani for shits and giggles.

And in case none of you got that, yes, it was a joke. I don't hate Cradle of Filth, it was merely a satire on leonheart's amazing way with the keyboard.

I thought this thread was dead? Well in any case, Venom is far superior!
