Walking Dead cranked up the tension this week, with Rick’s stealthy standoff and Tara and Glenn learning more about the strange crew that rescued them. Rick, Michonne, and Carl have a little domestic bliss, with Carl and Michonne joking about soy milk over dry cereal. It’s all fun and games until someone accidentally mentions his (presumed) dead baby sister. Rick suggests they hang out at the house for a while until they figure things out, so Michonne and Carl head out for supplies while Rick […]

The Face Off contestants make creative cryptids and we get a visit from Doug Jones, acclaimed creature actor. A foundation challenge starts us off, and it’s one of those fun “transform an entire group in two hours” challenges, like we saw last season with zombies. I love these, it’s very much like what the haunted house make-up artists do. This time it’s orcs! Laura Tyler (last season’s winner, and an avid D&D player) would have been right at home! Each team of two picked a […]

Walking Dead messes with nonlinear time and reveals snippets of what happened to the survivors of the prison battle. Sadly, most of these small stories are pretty dull. We start with Beth and Daryl escaping the walker-infested prison as Beth from the past narrates. The narration is actually her writing in her diary after the group found the prison. Her words are full of hope for their future living in the safety of the prison, obviously juxtaposed against the complete disaster that turned out to […]

From a shadowy shape, contestants must create a horrifying creature. Some of them will haunt my nightmares. Some of them were made of red solo cups and cling wrap. In a lonely warehouse, everyone meets McKenzie and Oren Peli, producer of the Paranormal Activity series and other horror films. They’re playing off the idea that it’s better and scarier to hide your monster in the shadows instead of showing it clearly. This is a horror idea I fully subscribe to, but how do you pull […]

A new season of Walking Dead begins with a perfect blend of emotion and action. It’s Carl’s Big Adventure, and Michonne does some soul searching. Two separate storylines this week showed us some of the aftermath of the battle at the prison. Luckily they didn’t try to show us every single character, giving us a nice tight focus on Carl and his dad, and Michonne. Carl has sort of grown up in front of all of us (as has actor Chandler Riggs). In light of […]

A desultory Face Off challenge results in a few interesting designs and one hilarious failure. First up is an immunity challenge, creating characters based on motorcycles. Decent idea, some nice bikes, and original Face Off judge Patrick Tatopoulos returns briefly. I thought that ghostly green and black rider was the most interesting character, but Daran won immunity with a very cool skull face and elaborate hair piece. The main challenge is to create a rock star based on a distinctive guitar. I’m with you so […]
