Panel of Experts: How do you feel fiction-writing and screen-writing compare?
Honeymoon (2014)
Honeymoon (2014) is a cautionary tale for newlyweds. Warning: this is not a chick flick with a happy ending. Well, depending on your taste, Honeymoon could be a chick flick or great popcorn flick for a girl’s night in. That is if you enjoy sappy romances that evolve into something sinister and disturbing. Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones—”you know nothing, Jon Snow”) plays Bea; a ravishing young lady who recently tied the knot with her beloved Paul (Harry Treadaway). The official trailer sort of gives… Read More »
Cabal
Next month Shout Factory will release Nightbreed: The Director’s Cut, a very different version of the film that 20th Century Fox let out of the cage in 1990. While you wait for that shiny Blu-ray; you could read the 1989 Clive Barker story Cabal published by Harper Collins (you know, the novel that the film is based on). This is dark fantasy where sexual politics and the ‘mob mentality’ wrestle underneath the surface of the twisted and self-destructive life of Aaron Boone—a man who cannot… Read More »

The Walking Dead, Season 5 Episode 1
The gang, well, most of them, are now at Terminus and reunited. Just how is this going to turn out? Let’s find out… Starting out with a visit to the recent past at Terminus, we see Gareth and some other Terminans (catchy, no?) debating their motives. Back to the present, Rick and the gang are making some bad ass makeshift weapons as they wile away their time in the restricted and dark, ominous trailer. The group moves with purpose and in silence and steady themselves… Read More »
Hesitant Alien: Thoughts on Gerard Way’s New Album
“Hesitant Alien” is an album that was just released September 29th, 2014 and I don’t know about you guys but I’ve been excited about it since it was first announced. It is the solo album of vocalist Gerard Way who was the front-man for the group My Chemical Romance for 12 years. Like many fans, I was really sad last year to see the band break up, but I was pretty sure that it wasn’t the last we’d be hearing from many of the members,… Read More »
Hellbound Heart and Scarlet Gospels
Attention Clive Barker fans: St. Martin’s Press have announced a release date for the novel that will end the Hellraiser mythology; The Scarlet Gospels is due May of 2015! This is exciting news considering the original novella that started it all, The Hellbound Heart, was first published in 1986—nearly thirty years ago! There are so many dodgy feature films that abuse the franchise that Clive Barker thought it was time to reclaim his precious story and put an end to the horror icon Pinhead. The… Read More »
Inner Demons
If an intervention turned out just like the one in Inner Demons then I would totally round up my mates, sit around the lounge room and wait for the emo makeup clad girl to freak us all out. IFC Midnight have released an indie film that should appeal to those who enjoy inevitable demonic possessions on-screen. Here we have a young woman who has fallen from grace. Instead of scoring top marks she is now scoring her next heroin fix. Her religious family are attempting… Read More »
Bloodborne
Bloodborne is a third-person action role-playing game, exclusive to the PlayStation 4 and due next year. Everybody loves a little dark fantasy. Traipse the cobblestone lanes of Yharnam’s cityscape. Appreciate the aesthetically pleasing tall fences and gates—check out that intricate filigree! Something sinister, however, lurks in the bowels of this glorious city. People are diseased and the dogs look like they escaped the Umbrella Corporation. Sure, the visuals look impressive. And so they should. Remember Dark Souls? The feel of this game is similar to… Read More »
The Pyramid
The Pyramid (2014) looks like Alien Versus Predator (2004) only the climate is a lot hotter and the archaeological survey team are not packing as much heat. Holden (Denis O’Heare—True Blood) leads a survey team through an unearthed and spooky three-sided pyramid in the Egyptian desert despite objection from the local authorities. There are traps and labyrinths and soon the curious Americans find out that they are not alone in the depths. There is talk of the Curse of the Pharaohs—the fatal consequences of disturbing… Read More »
Dracula Untold
Dracula Untold is another popular origin story that unveils the life of Vlad the Impaler/Prince of Wallachia (Luke Evans—Fast & Furious 6, The Hobbit) before he transforms into the popular horror icon, Dracula. The Ottoman Empire threatens to take a thousand boys from Transylvania to ensure their ongoing peace treaty. Vlad must choose whether he should appease the Turks’ demands or if he should fight to protect the future of his people (including his son). A great vampire lures Vlad to its lair.
