Panel of Experts: How do you feel fiction-writing and screen-writing compare?
Walking Dead: Internment
On Walking Dead this week: medical horror, dueling crises, and Full Metal Carl. I don’t really understand why, but the scenes of medical procedures and general grossness this week were a lot harder for me to watch than a zillion zombies getting their heads smashed in. I genuinely had to look away during the intubation scenes, especially Glen’s. All that coughing up blood and phlegm and disgusting crap just this me on a whole other level of squick. Hershel tries to leaven the hopeless situation… Read More »
Face Off: Swan Song
The Face Off season finale features…Swan Lake? Well, ok. Let’s see how that works out. Back at the house, the three remaining artists get some Skype time with their families. I always thought it was a little strange how big a deal they made about this, but Laura told me once that they really don’t get to talk to their families the whole time they’re on the show. I don’t really understand why the producers do that, but it does make it clearer why everyone… Read More »
Walking Dead: Indifference
This week’s Walking Dead left the prison behind for a pair of road trips, giving us a dynamic and strangely sad episode. The episode begins with an unsettling sequence cutting between Rick preparing for a run to find food and Carol having a talk with young Lizzie, all set to a throbbing score. Lizzie has a weird philosophy, that it’s better to be something terrible than nothing at all, comparing dying and turning into a zombie to growing up and becoming an adult. Carol instills… Read More »
Face Off: Flights of Fantasy
The last Face Off elimination episode results in four bird-human hybrid designs, and I didn’t like any of them. A trip to the airport and a meeting with some wildlife specialists reveals this week’s challenge: create designs based on a particular species of bird. I like that idea in theory. In practical terms, it didn’t turn out so well. Tate’s design is based on the Egyptian vulture, and has a huge one-piece sculpt encompassing the entire head, chest, and most of the arms. He seemed… Read More »
Walking Dead: Isolation
Imagine being stuck in a prison with a bunch of sick people for an hour. That was how this week’s Walking Dead felt. This plague/hemorrhagic fever going through the prison population is a terrible thing. Unfortunately it’s not a very exciting thing. For the most part this episode was a return to those flaccid days at the farm, when we’d get entire episodes of people standing around talking. There was a lot of talking this week. I’d love to go back and clock the screen… Read More »
Face Off: Dark Magic
On this week’s Face Off, so many shocking things happened. But actually nothing happened at all. Let’s get the Laney situation out of the way. She woke up feeling upset about Eddie being gone or just being homesick or something. It’s cool, everyone deals with that. Then the first day of the challenge she’s not feeling it and doesn’t really sculpt anything, opting for a good cry in the bathroom instead. Tate and Roy try to help and get her to work some more, but… Read More »
Walking Dead: Infected
Walking Dead draws on its roots this week, taking a cue from the original modern zombie film and exploring this strange new sickness. This season is off to a roaring good start. A huge reason for that is returning the focus to the zombies. Sure, one of Walking Dead’s big messages is that living humans are usually the worst part of the zombie apocalypse, but it’s a theme that hits hardest when you visit it from time to time. Long story short: it’s nice to… Read More »
Face Off The Laughing Dead
Face Off draws on the rich tradition of horror comedies to bring to life six funny/scary ghosts. Hilarifying. I was not excited about this episode of Face Off. The “whimsy” episode was marred by arbitrary judging based on incredibly subjective design criteria, and I didn’t expect much more from this one. Not that I hate horror comedies. My October horror film viewings this year have featured Gremlins, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, and Elvira: Mistress of the Dark. I just didn’t think it was going… Read More »
Walking Dead 401 – 30 Days Without An Accident
Walking Dead returns for a fourth season with a huge batch of new characters for us to watch die horrible deaths. The season unfolds with the crew still living at the prison. It’s apparent some amount of time has passed, just as between season two and three. It’s tough to say for sure, but it’s been at least a few months. Not content to hole up in their fenced in prison, they’ve instead been taking in other wandering survivors and building a community. Daryl’s become… Read More »
American Horror Story, Season 3, Episode 1
This was a highly anticipated season premiere, and the talk around the water cooler proved that the team behind American Horror Story had better bring their best. But did they? I say yes. Centered around witches, season three, aptly titled American Horror Story: Coven, is set in New Orleans, a place so witchy and mysterious that it’s been the inspiration for many a horror film and book. Take one look at the above ground crypts and oaks with their ghostly Spanish moss floating from their… Read More »
