Face Off Mortal Sins

Face Off gets religion with a challenge based on the seven deadly sins. This season’s group house looks like a nice place in a fairly regular suburban neighborhood, instead of the fancy porn mansions from past seasons. But did you notice the hedges in the yard when Laney and Laura were chatting? I’ve never seen 60-foot hedges before. The challenge is revealed by McKenzie and Glen in a church. Each artist has to create a creature based on one of the seven deadly sins (because… Read More »
Face Off – Cosmic Circus

Face Off breaks our hearts this week. With only eight artists left, someone with a ton of talent gets sent home, and there’s a lot of crying. Right to the challenge this week, no screwing around. Some people come out and do a crazy acrobatic routine. It’s Cirque Berzerk! They want the artists to create something that returns to the circus’ “sexy, dark, punk rock roots.” I’m not really sure the circus has those roots, but ok. Oh, a twist. The designs are also aliens.… Read More »
Face Off – Living Art

An interesting art-based Face Off challenge is almost ruined when the judges don’t seem to grasp surrealism. It doesn’t matter because Elvira showed up. Elvira! For the foundation challenge, everyone has to create a “young, hip” take on Elvira’s iconic look. It was a pretty cool challenge, and we saw pretty creative angles. Roy won with a bat-themed take, though Tate’s sexy evil nurse was pretty spot on. Let’s all take a moment to bask in the awesomeness of Elvira. Halloween would just not be… Read More »
Face Off Trick or Treat

Face Off makes you wish it was Halloween every week. Clowns, scarecrows, vampires, skeletons, devils: if you’re into evil, you’re a friend of mine. Back at the Face Off pad, everyone seemed a little stunned that RJ was sent home last week (the second veteran, after Eric Z). Then it was off to a foundation challenge. With immunity on the line, the task was to create a unique character based entirely on a set of costume teeth. With only two hours to work with, each… Read More »
Face Off – Mother Earth Goddess

This week’s Face Off gave us a cute mom connection, but it was also a bit heartbreaking. There’s so much talent this season that every cut seems unjust. Everyone tromps out to the L.A. Arboretum (I think?) to look at plants and learn they have to design a Mother Nature goddess figure, and include some aspect inspired by their own mothers. This gives us a chance to see adorable photos of everyone with their moms. I loved seeing Miranda as a kid in her little… Read More »
Face Off Subterranean Terror

The Face Off contestants get the subterranean homesick blues, Roy sculpts a squid in one hour, one rookie gets the “Halloween mask” kiss of death, and the producers mostly ignore the middle looks because hey we need half an hour of judges judging. Really straightforward business this week. No foundation challenge, no teams, no twists. Everyone goes underground to find one of six scenes with evidence of a subterranean creature. Twelve artists, twelve original creatures, no film or video game tie-in. Jordu Schell is the… Read More »
Face Off Total Transformation

It’s time for Face Off’s “whimsical challenge” week, when the contestants try desperately to figure out what the judges think whimsical means. Plus, a double elimination. Starting out, Lyma has a good attitude about being a bottom look last week, vowing to learn from the judges’ criticisms. This is the usual Face Off foreshadowing, but does it mean Lyma will excel this week, or totally fail to learn from her mistakes and get eliminated? The foundation challenge this week involves the movie Insidious and the… Read More »
Face Off – Future Frankenstein

On this week’s Face Off, Face Off settles in for a long season of being Face Off. Now let’s make some future Frankensteins. At the end of last season I had some suggestions to improve Face Off, because the formula’s getting a little predictable. This season’s “vets versus newbs” twist is different, but otherwise it seems like little has changed. In some cases that’s great (Michael Westmore doing weekly walk-throughs to advise the contestants); in some cases it’s deathly boring (this week, the judging segment… Read More »
True Blood Season 6, Episode 10

It’s the season six finale and it could go any way. What will Sookie do about marrying Warlow? What happens to Bill after losing most of his blood? Where did Eric go? All of this and more is revealed tonight. As Terry is put into the grave, Sookie takes a walk with a very fine-looking Alcide. Let’s face it, is he ever anything but? They share a tender moment but are interrupted when Alcide smells the day walking vamps as they come back to Bill’s… Read More »
Face Off Season Five Premier

Face Off is back for a fifth season! This time around, the competitors tasked with creating grotesque and amazing make-up effects on insane deadlines are joined by ten returning veterans from past seasons. The veterans are quite a mix. Some made it to the finals of their respective seasons, while others were early flameouts. Some of my all-time favorite contestants (Roy, Laura, Alana, RJ) are back, which already has my interest in this season dialed up. And the newbies? I guess we’ll have to wait… Read More »
